Is Online Gambling Legal in Massachusetts?

Online casino games such as slots, poker, and tables are illegal in the Bay State. Legal forms of online gambling in MA include pari-mutuel wagering and daily fantasy sports.

As is the case with most US states, Massachusetts is yet to catch up with the reality and presently doesn't have any laws either allowing or prohibiting gambling on the internet.

Residents of Massachusetts who want to play slots, poker and table games online can do so at social casinos and sweepstakes sites, or through apps, with free virtual coins used instead of real money.

Predominantly, these sites are for entertainment purposes only, although some of them offer jackpot prizes, too.

The minimum legal gambling age in Massachusetts hinges on upon the gambling activity:

  • Land-Based Casinos: 21

  • Poker Rooms: 21

  • Lottery: 18

  • Bingo: 18

  • Pari-Mutuel Wagering: 18

  • Plainridge Park Casino

  • MGM Springfield

As the state gradually loosens its strict gambling laws, Massachusetts' gambling options are increasing for land-based gamblers. Despite the ongoing restrictions in place, there has never been more freedom to bet in MA than there is now.

Massachusetts does not authorise or license any online casino, poker room, or sports betting sites. However, the state permits games of skill as a legal option for online gambling. That being said, daily fantasy sports is the only type of online gambling presently permitted in Massachusetts.

There have been several legislative attempts to legalise online betting; in 2021, the House of Representatives passed an online sports betting bill, paving the way for online sports betting to be introduced at some point.

However, there is still no discussion regarding legalising online wagering on casino-style games in Massachusetts.

Can I Get in Trouble for Gambling in a Massachusetts Online Casino?

Massachusetts does not have laws addressing online gaming, so there are no clear punishments in place. Still, if you decide to play at an online casino in Massachusetts, choose a regulated one.

What is the Future of MA Online Gambling?

Although relatively small, the Massachusetts casino industry has started to evolve significantly. The state has shown to be open to the notion of online gambling, as MA was one of the few US states to legalise daily fantasy sports betting.

In July 2021, the Massachusetts House of Representatives passed a bill to legalise sports betting; however, the proposal stalled in the state's Senate, and it's still unclear when or if sports betting would become legal.

If passed by the Senate, the bill would pave the way to legalise online betting, too, although it would most likely be limited to sports wagering. Currently, there are no discussions about legalising casino-style betting online in Massachusetts.
