Wimbledon Betting: What You Need to Know About the Tournament

The Wimbledon Championship is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. It’s one of four Grand Slam tournaments alongside the Australian, French, and US Open.

Typically, it’s held during the first two weeks of July at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London. It’s also the only major tournament still played on grass, keeping the tennis tradition alive.

The Wimbledon Championships are divided into Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ tournaments. Depending on their ATP/WTA rankings and previous performance, a certain number of players are given seedings for both singles and doubles tournaments. Other players have to undergo a set of qualifying matches to secure their spot in the top 128.

Wimbledon is an elimination-based tournament, with Gentlemen’s tournament played as double-elimination. Similarly, only the Gentlemen’s matches are played in the best-of-five sets format, while all other matches are best-of-three sets. Tiebreakers are kept to a minimum, with only one tiebreaker game played if the final set reaches a 6-6 result.

As for the previous winners, Roger Federer holds the title of most wins (8) in the Gentlemen’s singles, while Martina Navratilova has the most wins (9) in the Ladies’ singles.

Statistically, it is highly unlikely that either a wild card or an unseeded player wins Wimbledon. The only player who has ever managed to do both was Goran Ivanišević in 2001. Germany’s Boris Becker was the only other wild card player to win the Wimbledon Championship, way back in 1985.

So, if you’re looking for any Wimbledon betting tips, then maybe avoid betting on wild cards as outright winners if you’re after easy, safe bets. But, the betting odds can get very high for those bets, earning you quite a jackpot if you predict the outcome correctly.

Popular Betting Markets Offered by Wimbledon Betting Sites

Tennis is one of the most interesting sports when it comes to sports betting. Sportsbooks tend to offer dozens of betting markets for each match, but with Wimbledon betting it’s even more interesting as you’ll be flooded with betting opportunities. Here are the most popular ones.

Outright Wimbledon Winner

The most common tournament bet in tennis, including Wimbledon, is on the outright winner of the whole tournament. Betting sites offer betting on both men’s and women’s Wimbledon tournaments, with the markets closing the moment the tournament starts.

Aside from picking the winner of the whole tournament, you can often bet on Wimbledon underdogs (unseeded) getting to the finals, or the winner of the half/quarter of the tournament.

Game and Match Totals

Betting on the totals of a game or a match is always an exciting in-play betting option. This is a straightforward bet - you’re simply betting whether the total score will go over a certain threshold. Totals betting in tennis is versatile, too, and you can bet on the total number of games in a match, as well as the total number of breaks, double faults, or aces.

Handicap Betting

Another popular type of bet is handicaps. These can be 2-way or 3-way bets and they can involve betting on a winner of a Wimbledon match or in-play betting on specific games. Each player is given a positive or a negative value which impacts their final score, evening the playing field.

How to Bet on Wimbledon: Betting Strategies

When you’re betting on a specific competition, like Wimbledon in this instance, there are more than a handful of important pieces of information to factor in. Only then you can optimize your betting slips and make the best decisions when browsing your favourite sportsbooks.

Here are some of the key strategies and tips to remember when betting on Wimbledon matches:

  • Shortlist your favourite players and follow their progress. Keeping track of players you wish to bet on throughout the season will give you valuable insight before the Championships start. You’ll also better understand Wimbledon betting odds and will know whether the odds jump at you.
  • Learn about player surface proficiency. This is often overlooked even by experienced punters but can be a deciding factor in each player’s performance during the tournament. Tennis players prefer different surfaces and not every one of them excels at a grass surface.
  • Understand the uniqueness of tennis on grass courts. Speaking of Wimbledon’s iconic surface, the grass is arguably the fastest tennis surface, making the back serve-and-volley players big standouts. Fast servers perform exceptionally well at Wimbledon, for example.
  • Take note of the qualifier round. Betting on seeded players is always a safe option. But, Wimbledon is known for shakeups from the players that got their spot through the qualifier round. Additionally, these players can become rising stars, so keep an eye on them.
  • Understand scheduling and player fatigue. Wimbledon is played on a very tight schedule - the whole tournament has to end within a single week! Fatigue is real and knowing how players manage it, as well as how their matches are scheduled will lead to making better bets.
  • Learn the historic matchups. Tennis players often have a “nemesis,” a player they struggle against. Discover patterns in head-to-head records and you’ll know when to bet on the underdogs or top-seeders.
  • Take advantage of in-play betting. Momentum plays a big role in tennis and can lead to some exciting in-play betting opportunities. Just like momentum riding, big comebacks are also rather frequent, so this is where your knowledge of players and their performance comes into play.
  • Manage your bankroll. Betting on tennis should be fun like the sport itself. If you find yourself spending more on bets than you’re comfortable with, dial your betting down and consider enabling betting limits on your account.
  • Avoid betting like a fan. This should go without saying about all sports betting, but picking your bets based on your personal favourites instead of statistical data can lead to big losses. In short, don’t bet with your heart, bet with your head.

And that’s pretty much it. Now, just grab yourself some strawberries with cream, sit back, and enjoy all the thrills of betting on Wimbledon.
