The game Starburst. from NetEnt, set the entire gaming world into a frenzy with its release some years ago. It became a bit hit for NetEnt, and still is very popular today. Other game providers decided to jump into the same boat and came out with various similar games, but only Fruit Zen from BetSoft has almost the same concept as Starburst, with 3 Wild Reels in the center, but using fruit symbols instead. This Star Jewels game from Rival is a follower too, but is more influenced by other similar games, by having only 2 Wild Reels and not 3, and using various gems and card icons for its symbols. Aesthetically, Star Jewels looks acceptable but not as nice as Starburst. The overall quality of its graphics is slightly lower and not as vibrant.
The word 'Wild' is the Wild symbol, appearing only on reels 1 and 3. It doesn't pay anything for itself, it doesn't double any wins with it, but it substitutes for all symbols. There aren't any Scatter or Bonus symbols in the game. Any winning combination with a Wild symbol triggers a Respin, with the Wild symbol expanding into a full Wild Reel and gets locked in position. Any new appearing Wild symbol becomes a Wild Reel too and gets locked for another Respin. More than 2 Respins are possible, but it usually ends with just the one or two respins. What is very disappointing is that there aren't any win multiplier to replace the non-existing third Wild Reel, so all payouts tend to be very low indeed. The Diamond is the highest paying symbol, 5 of which pays a low 1000x, the Pearl pays 400x, the Ruby pays 400x, the Blue Gem pays 300x, and the other lower symbols pay from 250x to 60x, all per line bet for 5 of each kind. With such low values and with non-paying-doubling Wilds, the paytable can only be very low.
Although Star Jewels can give extended play time most of the time, the frequent small insignificant wins soon becomes too apparent and boring. Excitement is greatly lacking with just the Wild Reels on reels 1 and 3, and getting any decent 5-of-a-kind win becomes more difficult and rare. Those low symbols 5-of-a-kind wins are hardly any good at all with their 1x or 2x total bet win amount, and simply fails to bring enjoyment and excitement. Worse still, Star Jewels doesn't pay both ways like Starburst and other similar games do, and that sucks big time!
