Crown Gems - Hi Roller Slot is a 50-payline video slot which runs on the Barcrest Games software platform. The game features various symbols, ranging from precious gemstones to different letters, all of which pay differently. Players are invited to try their hand at the slot on this page free of charge or play the game for real money in any of the Barcrest Games casinos found in the listings.

Prior to spinning the bejewelled reels, players should adjust their wager. “Stake/Line” selects the wager per payline, which ranges from 0.01 to 50. “Spin” initiates the game at the selected bet, while “Autoplay” spins the reels for a preset number of times automatically and without stopping. Pressing “Hi Roller” allows players to play up to 50 paylines for more chances to win.

In order to win the game’s jackpot of 5,000 coins, players need to acquire 5 Crown symbols on an enabled payline.

LIKED

As a ten line slot I expected to see some big hits on the paytable and I think the wins offered by Crown Gems are fairly acceptable with the highest paying crown symbol returning 5000 coins for a five of a kind. Unfortunately it seems to be the one symbol that is not stacked on the reels although it does appear with just a single symbol inbetween two of them in places so it should still be possible to hit more than one full line at a time. Interestingly too is the fact that wins pay anywhere on a payline and not just from the left hand side meaning you can win with just three symbols in the centre of the reels or with three or more symbols starting from the right hand side as well as the more usual left to right style combinations.

The game also offers a "High Roller" mode, enabling you to increase the size of your stake to play up to fifty lines at a time. This is particularly interesting because the paytable remains the same regardless of how many lines you choose to play and the paytable feels quite generous to me for a 50 line game. As the name suggests though you can't use this option when playing on penny stakes and the minimum bet is set at 0.10 per line meaning five fifty line high roller spins cost a heavy 50.00 a time. That's a little rich for my blood and I can imagine being pretty upset if I used this option and ended up with five dead spins!

Crown Gems feels like a real blast from the past and certainly gave me a hefty dose of nostalgia, but you may well be unimpressed if it's the first time you have seen the game!

DISLIKED

When I saw this game on the main screen at VideoSlots casino I couldn't resist opening it to see if it might be the same game I remembered seeing in the pubs way back in the day, and amazingly it actually is a slightly enhanced version of the ancient pub slot I had been thinking of. You can certainly tell it's an old game, the user interface looks almost laughably child like in todays world of high resolution slots - all of the controls and stake information windows are huge and the symbols too look way too simple and basic, but I guess the positive side of this is that it's extremely straightforward and easy to understand.

Crown Gems is produced by Barcrest who were a titan of the fruit machine industry here in the UK back in the 1990's and I believe are the parent company of IGT as I'm sure I have seen their logo on a number of popular slots such as Rainbow Riches in recent years. A lot of IGT games also look very basic by on-line standards and I think it's fair to suggest that this game was literally just cloned from it's decades old pub cabinet to create this on-line variation.
