Hotline Review - Editor’s Impressions

Take a trip back to the 80s and experience the flashy cars and questionable fashion with the Hotline game. This 80’s-themed slot, which looks like kind of a ripoff of the classic show Miami Vice, features immersive gameplay and is perfect if you love action-packed games. Keep reading this detailed Hotline slot review to find out more.

While testing the game like in other online slot reviews, we were able to trigger our first win, and it did not take long before the bonus round. The Respin feature was the most interesting as it kept us guessing whether more Wilds would land on the reels.

Overview of Hotline Game

The Hotline slot was developed by NetEnt and is played on five reels and three rows with 30 fixed paylines. Its retro design takes inspiration from the 80s to create a distinctive gaming screen. Winning lines are created by landing three or more matching symbols starting from the leftmost reel.

Lower-paying symbols are the ring, a necklace, and a crown, all furnished with diamonds. High-paying symbols are represented by two detectives, inspired by James “Sonny” Crockett and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs in Miami Vice, and a mysterious lady on the phone.

The red sports car is the Wild, and it can substitute for all other symbols in the grid except the Scatter. The Scatter is an image of a beautiful sunset with the word Scatter.

Try the Hotline slot demo to understand the gameplay before playing for real money at an online casino.

Hotline RTP, Payout and Volatility

The RTP of the Hotline slot is 96.13% and the game has medium to high volatility. The bet range is very high from £0.30 to £60 per spin. The maximum payout is 2,800x the initial stake and a screen full of Wilds can award up to 400x.

Hotline Graphics and Gaming Experience

Hotline slot looks more like a video game than a slot. The five-reel slot grid sits in front of bright neon lights and palm trees reminiscent of the city of Miami, creating an engaging setting. Its design exudes a retro and neon-soaked atmosphere.

A synth wave-inspired soundtrack complements the entire design to give you an immersive experience.

Hotline Bonus Features

Three bonus features are available on the Hotline slot, each offering exciting elements. The Hotline Bonus Bet Feature is the most distinctive. It allows you to activate three hotlines, increasing your stake and chances of landing Wilds. However, since you have to increase your bet to get into the bonus this feature is not available to UK players.

When an expanding Wild lands on the slot reels, it triggers the Respin feature, and more spins will follow if new Wilds activate the hotline.

Hotline Free Spins

The Free Spins feature is triggered by landing three Scatter symbols on the first, third, and fifth reel. This will award seven Free Spins; if a Wild lands, it will fill the reels for the whole Free Spins round. A screen full of expanding Wilds increases the potential of landing the max win of 2,800x your stake.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Playing Hotline?

You should be aware of a few pros and cons before playing Hotline real money.

  • Outstanding theme and animations
  • Bonus rounds and Free Spins
  • Distinctive hotline feature
  • Wide bet range

  • The design lacks originality
  • Bonus Bet Feature not available to UK players

Where to Play Hotline Online

If you want the best online experience while playing online slots, our list of reputable NetEnt casinos is an ideal place to start. Nonetheless, we recommend Mr. Play Casino, which has the Hotline slot machine and other NetEnt games in its lobby.

Summary of Hotline - How Many Hotlines Will You Choose?

With ultimate excitement during Free Spins and Respins, we were impressed by the Hotline slot. Its retro design and soundtrack from the 80s accurately matched the storyline, creating a nostalgic throwback for players of a certain age.

The few spins we tried triggered the bonus rounds, and we were able to land a few wins. However, we did not fill the screen with Wilds for a chance to win 400x our initial stake.

We recommend trying the game's demo version to understand the basics before playing at a Hotline online casino for real money.

Miami Vice, is an American crime drama TV series, which starred Don Johnson as James "Sonny" Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, two Metro-Dade Police Department detectives working undercover in Miami. Unlike standard police procedurals, the show drew heavily upon 1980s New Wave culture and became noted for its integration of contemporary pop and rock music and stylish way of life.

NetEnt Software, brings up the memorabilia effect which emerges from the unforgettable TV series with the culture of an entire decade - The 80's! The developer has managed to adapt, a special mix presenting an attractive "Hotline" video slot, across 5 Reels/30 Paylines. The slot features: Hotline Bonus Bet/Expanding Wilds/Reel Respins/Synth Wave soundtrack/Stunning graphics and Animation intro.

Despite the low Paytable, the Players will enjoy the retro 80's Mania with a smooth and classic gameplay.

Now that I have got to play Hotline even more, I must leave another review to add sth to the previous one. ;)
Of course my 10 star evaluation hasn’t changed in the progress.
The game has clearly quite low volatility; so you won’t necessarily win that big; but you will certainly win OFTEN. ;)

I usually always play with all of the 3 bonus lines activated. Ofc it’s more expensive per bet; but imo, it is totally worth it. Sometimes previously, when I only played with the one active bonus line; the cars almost never landed on it. But with the 3 active bonus lines, they just keep coming. ;) So I might even claim, that you will win a lot more in the long run with just all of the bonus lines activated at the same time. I totally recommend it.

My biggest win so far has been ~ 157x bet (846 euros with a bet of 5.40 ); it happened, when during re-spins I managed to get 4 reels stacked with the car wilds; and the remaining reel was finally stacked with 3 of the highest paying symbols; ie. the ladies.
I have managed to get the stacked wild cars on 4 reels simultaneously (during the course of the re-spins) several times.
Also I have managed to get to the Bonus game several times now as well. ;) For example, last time when I got there, I scored a smooth win of ~ 58x the bet.
Unnecessary to even say; I really enjoy the bonus game, which includes 7 free spins; during them, and wild cars that land on the bonus lines (and expand), will stick there until the end of the bonus round. And if you play with all of the 3 bonus lines activated; then all of them will ofc be active in the bonus game as well.
With stacked car wilds on 3 reels, I have scored for example wins of ~ 71x and 38x my bets in the base game.

Personally, I like this kind of low volatility a lot. You really seem to win quite often; and imo, wins of several dozens of times your bet are very smooth & cool too, especially when they really seem to come SO frequently. I myself am totally cool with this and will certainly continue playing this game.

I have simply had a great time playing this game. It is just super entertaining & amusing to play, in every way & sense. I have even recommended especially this game to a couple of my friends, who aren’t even customers of any casino yet. ;)

If you prefer high(er) volatility games; then this game isn’t probably the best one for you.
Also the 3 Scatters seem to come quite rarely; but that, on the other hand, seems to be the case in most other slots in the market as well.

I’m a HUGE fan of NetEnt. When I decided to try out this one of their slots the other day, once again I wasn’t disappointed.
I deposited 1 k€, played just a few spins of under 10 euros each, and soon enough my balance was almost 2.1 k€, which is when I decided to request a cashout ofc.
I was playing with the extra bonus lines all the time, and was blessed enough to get the wild car features quite often. At the best, I had 3 wild reels simultaneously. A couple of times, if I remember right. This is when you will hit those amazing wins indeed.
I was not lucky enough to get to the Free Spins Bonus game yet, but I’m sure that is more than amazing as well. Maybe some day later I’ll hit that too. ;)
I just LOVE the retro 80’s theme, the music, design, characters, colors. Everything about this slot is just so cool.
Did you know that the tune can also be found on Spotify? ;)
I will definitely return to this game sometimes later.

Ofc I regret not having hit the Bonus game yet ;) But I know it’ll come if I just keep playing.
I understand the super retro theme may be found even annoying by some; for me, that’s not the case, since I happen to love it.

Hotline slot is one of my favorite Netent releases of last year. At first I was a bit skeptical as I wasn't really a fan of the new games they were releasing, that, along with the fact that it's a 15 payline slot. I'm used to playing 20-liners, 25-liners so having 15 lines I though- meh, can it pay? But after many many sessions with it, I can clearly say- yes it can.

The game is inspired by 1960s Miami Vice theme with beautiful cars, getaways and danger luring in every step of the way. Once again Netent has done a marvelous job with the design, as the color scheme is vibrant and the symbols look rich. The game has an interesting re-spin feature as well as 7 free spins bonus round triggered by scatter symbols on reels 1,3 and 5.

When you play Hotline slot, you'll want to see a lot of car symbols as they work as wilds and by default, when the car lands in the middle of any of the reels, it will expand and give you a respin. However, in the free spins round, they will become sticky wilds. I personally really enjoy this game and I think it has good winning potential. I really like the fact that you can also activate the bonus bet on the other two rows- meaning, for an extra price you can have the wild symbols expanding even if they're not in the middle.

I've had some ups and downs with this game as sometimes the base game can be very cold and if you're playing it with 0.45$ or higher bets, it can leave you high and dry very quickly. But on the other hand, it has helped me to meet wagering for a couple of bonuses- once I got it in a good mood and played with 0.90$ per spin and had a few 100x bet winnings that I didn't manage to capture. But one thing is sure- if you play with other reels activated as well, the bonus round gives such an adrenaline rush as it's possible to get nearly full screen of cars! I had it once and it paid well!

Overall it's a beautiful game, it can be a great help to meet wagering requirements because of the wild feature. This probably won't be the game that will pay mega wins, but I definitely think it has good winning potential.

Whatever Miami TV series or movie this Hotline game may have been based upon, my first impression when I first looked at it was its similarity with Quickspin's The Wild Chase game. Both are about robbers stealing valuables - which in the case of Hotline, is about robbing jewelleries. A very new game from NetEnt no doubt, but the graphics quality simply failed to impress me! The overall presentation of Hotline looks dated, like it came from some years ago, and the colours simply lack vibrancy too.

Looking at the values of the symbols in the paytable only made my jaw opened wide - I simply couldn't believe the incredibly and extremely low values! The highest paying symbol, the Lady, pays an unbelievable 6x total bet win for getting 5 of her, so the other symbols can only have even lower unbelievable win values! The Wild symbols don't pay anything, so getting 5 Wilds on a payline would be absolutely nothing to shout about - you get a blardy win of just 6x the total bet! Similarly, the Sunset Scatter symbols are also non-paying, but worse still, they award only 7 free spins and without any multiplier too! What the argh!

Don't ever let the possibility of getting 5 Wild Reels makes you think that this Hotline is a super game - it simply isn't! Why? Firstly, the Wilds can only substitute for the highest paying symbol, the Lady, which has a maximum win of a miserable 6x total bet! So even if you get all 5 Wild Reels, at 30 paylines, they would only pay a 180x total bet win, which is simply unheard of! Compare getting 5 Wild Reels (Harps) in Jack And The Beanstalk game, or 5 Wild Reels (Wild Desire) in Immortal Romance, for example, and you can see how ridiculous this 180x total bet win really is! Secondly, in order to get all those 5 Wild Reels, you need to activate all 3 Hotlines, at a cost of 3x the initial bet per spin! So, instead of playing with just $0.15 bet per spin for 1 Hotline, you'd be playing with $0.45 bet per spin for 3 Hotlines, which most of the time, would only go to waste by the empty spins!

But wait, that isn't all of it yet! When playing with just 1 Hotline activated, the Red Car Wild symbol would appear quite often, but not always landing in the Hotline zone. Playing with all 3 Hotlines activated, the Wild symbol would hardly appear at all, even after numerous empty spins! Honestly speaking, I found that playing with 2 or 3 Hotlines activated would only be a big waste of money! It's really pointless to chase after those 4 or 5 Wild Reels, because they cannot ever pay big!

Playing with $0.15 bets per spin, with 1 activated Hotline, can be considered as normal, but playing with $0.45 bets per spin, with 3 Hotlines activated, would really be nonsensical! You can still get better wins, get up to 5 Wild Reels (depending on the game), and all for just the minimum bet per spin. But worst of all, the paytable is simply too extremely and too ridiculously low!

I really liked the style of this slot. I really love retro wave and 80's. Very well done the initial screen saver and musical accompaniment of the slot.

The slot itself could be made brighter. Pictures in the squares dim.
