This is one of those 5 reel slots which I prefer since it brings back memories of how games used to be but this also mixes in the cascades of the more modern games so it’s a mixture of old and new. To see good old Gonzo making his gestures on the side and reacting to what happens on the reels is always fun to watch he is a bit of a character and for that NetEnt has done a good job with this slot. The music is also something enjoyable, the sound effects and the jungle theme. A fairly decent RTP of 96% is an added bonus for sure but be sure to check the helpfile of the slot as NetEnt is making variable RTP’s so you might be playing on a lower RTP than the original 96%. My more recent play on this slot has shown me that a feature occurs around found the average of triggering a feature for me around every 159 spins on average and that is for the most recent 23 features. That is something to like about this slot that you don’t need to wait hundreds of spins like you would on some more modern games such as those megaways which can easily go 500 or 1000 spins. I will say something you only need to wait for less than 100 spins as 8 of those 23 recent features triggered in under 100 spins for me one time back to back! However, a couple of the longest took 391 and 467 spins so beware it can be stubborn at times.

(one 50x, one 58x and one 100x). There are frequent little losses disguised as wins during the base game and you wonder how much longer it’s going to take for the feature to drop in as it likes to tease a lot with those gold coins since they need to be on pay lines and not just random positions. I must say that I did not like the game at all at first, I've waited more than 6 months before I gave this game a chance. I have been playing this game for a few years now and have to say its payout percentage is suppose to be around 96%. This is total nonsense anybody that believes this will just lose and lose and lose time and time again it takes far too much money in to get bonus round which is 10 free spins with possible 15x. When I first came across Gonzos Quest I was really intrigued by the unusual structure and mechanics of the game – On every spin, the contents of the “reels” drop off the bottom of the screen and are replaced by a new set of blocks that drop into place from above. Whilst this may seem very much the same as any other five reel slot game on first glance, it really does work very differently as there are no fixed reel strips or similar.

Nevertheless, there is obviously some kind of structuring going on with the system that determines what blocks fall onto the screen as you never see whole stacks of the same color, or even two of the same color adjacent to one another vertically – whilst I have no doubt the game meets its advertised RTP figures, it does make me wonder how its definition of “random” is determined.

During play the game acts pretty much the same as the “Rolling Reels” type games from Microgaming such as Break Away or Football Star, or the “Thor” mode in Thunderstruck2, with new symbols dropping onto the reels as winning combinations explode and make room for further blocks at the top of the window. Each successive winning combination awards a higher multiplier, up to 5x in normal play.

The bonus feature is a pretty standard free spins affair, interestingly though, the trigger symbols are not scatters, but three golden blocks which appear on the first 3 “reels” only. You need to score these on a payline in order to trigger the bonus, which can be extremely frustrating! Unusually though, the wild symbol does count as part of this combination, which is very rare on a slot game in my experience. Despite this it does seem extremely hard to trigger the bonus round on this game. During the free spins mode the maximum multiplier increases to 15x, making for some seriously big win possibilities, but as ever you need to be really quite lucky to enjoy even a single 15x hit during the feature.

I really think NetEnt have lost their way somewhat in recent years, and whilst Gonzos isn’t a favorite of mine by any stretch, its certainly much better than many of their more recent efforts!
