Today, I decided to join Christopher Colombus and set sail to the open seas to explore and discover new lands. There's still plenty of new 'lands' for me to discover, especially those in the 'Play'nGo' continent, of which I've only discovered a few. Christopher may have made new discoveries with his steering wheel and his compass, but for me, I shall make new discoveries with my steering fingers and my laptop. Centuries ago, yes, they would say new discoveries without going out to the open seas would be impossible. Nowadays, new discoveries can be found without needing to venture out in the dark. New discoveries can also be found by spending time just sitting in the loo! Hahaha.
Sails of Gold, referring to those particular ships that appear only during the free spins, otherwise, it's just another ship with sails of white linen, or whatever, the kind that you will find here in the base game. Those ships are the Scatter symbols, appearing only on reels 1, 3 and 5, and getting all three of them at the same time awards 10 free spins with the Golden Ship Wilds. Getting all 3 of these ships do not reward you with any cash, strangely and dumbly enough, but merely to trigger or retrigger more free spins, if you're lucky enough to get them. The good 'ole' Christopher is none other than the Wild symbol, and getting all five of him would pay 5000x the line bet. However, these Wilds don't double any wins, they don't come stacked or expanded, neither do they move about on the reels. In my books, they are still considered as dumb Wilds! The other symbols pay from 1000x down to 100x the line bet for 5 of each kind. Centuries ago, these values would be considered incredible, but nowadays, they are nothing more than very low and crappy. With such a low paytable, don't ever expect to get nice big wins from Sails of Gold. Be satisfied with what you can get, or don't play the game at all!
Playing this game for the very first time, it immediately reminded me of another game from Play'nGo, that of Golden Caravan. The same 10-paylines, the same game concept, the same scatter-turn-Wild feature, and almost sharing the same paytable too, but that of Golden caravan has better win values for the symbols. Sails of Gold sets out with lower values, and hence with lower win possibilities. This becomes quite apparent when you start playing the game with real money. Most of the spins would be payless, or with very small payouts for 3-of-a-kinds, not even enough to get your bet amount back. 2 Ship Scatters may come a few times closely together, but doesn't pay anything and doesn't award anything, because the third ship hardly ever comes into the horizon. So every appearance of those 2 white ships only brought disappointment for me, most of the time.
I did get a few of the Free Spins game, needless to say, those 10 free spins without any win multiplier, sad to say, with payouts from the game that hardly makes anyone's day. The wins that I have gotten from the free spins were like 3x, 4x, 8x, 11x and 15x my total bet. 5 Free Spins games won, and not one game paid more than 20x my bet, and none of the retriggers as well! That really really sucks! Unlike with Golden Caravan, my first ever play on that game was a lot of fun, entertaining, getting several Free Spins games, getting retriggers, and getting decent payouts too. Why couldn't Sails of Gold be like that too?
With its very low paytable, with its lack-lustre gameplay, with its non-exciting Wilds and Scatters, Sails of Gold failed me miserably! I was not impressed at all. Maybe it was just not my day, maybe things went the wrong way, but the game just didn't perform well in any way!
