Secret Code is a very old release from Netent, with 5 reels and 20 paylines. This dark slot comes with a haunting soundtrack where you will hear chanting monks with the wind whistling through the corridors of an ancient stone castle, almost like in winter when the wind blows very hard making that noise on the outside.

When I first saw the slot looks like it's set in a cage, almost like the Mummy. Look out for the wild symbol (a cloaked man holding a knife) as he substitutes for all symbols except the scatter and bonus symbols. Now wild only appears on the 3 middle reels and expands to cover the whole reel when part of a winning combination. If you manage to get 3 wilds you can prepare yourself for huge wins, as the paytable is still a bit old school, so you can get pay values of 1000 – 5000 coins for 5 of kinds with the higher paying symbols. This means you can get premium symbol on reels 1 and 5 with 3 wilds, which means if you get 5000 coins, x7 as the wilds substitute, let alone if you do this during free spins with an increasing multiplier, then you in for huge wins. Make me wonder what's the maximum win the slot is offering.

There is also a bonus feature – You can activate the feature by getting the key and lock bonus symbol on reels 3, 4 and 5. Its basically like a pick me feature, however, you need to take the keys and match them with statues. For each key correctly allocated, you are awarded with a set of coins. Once the feature ends you gamble your full winning amount or half of the winnings by matching key to the correct statue.

The free spins feature which is played when 3 or more scatter symbols appears anywhere on the reels. Let me assure you getting 3 scatters is very difficult, you often get 2, but that 3rd one can take forever to land. You then choose a scatter to reveal the number of free spins and the multiplier you’ll play with. There’s up to 15 free spins to be won and a maximum start of x3 multiplier.

During the feature, you can benefit from an increasing multiplier. 2 or more scatter symbol will reveal the multiplier by the number of scatters shown. If you were to get 4 scatters, the multiplier would go up by 4. The maximum multiplier can reach 20x

The game has the potential, but I never really saw very huge wins. However, you can see where the games potential is though, but getting 3 wilds is not easy by the way. I had a couple of x100 and x200 wins from base game, however not nothing really during free spins, but the bonus trigger often and you can win something there.

Do you like watching the movie 'DaVinci's Code'? Or any other treasure hunting movies like those of Raiders Of The Lost Ark series? Yeah, I love them too. All those mysterious clues are mind boggling to decipher, and how each one finally got revealed was even more interesting. Food for the brain, so to speak, hehehe. This Secret Code game is based on such a movie, so lots of players are gonna love playing it, although there's no need to decipher any clues, except to use the right key for the right box. If you've played this game, then you'd know exactly what I meant, hehehe.

There's nothing new in the concepts of the game - it's yet another mix-and-match concoction by NetEnt, but it seems to work pretty well in this game, as compared to some others. The best part is the Expanding Wilds on reels 2, 3 and 4, and getting all three would certainly produce some good wins. So watch out for that expanding Hooded Man, the Wild symbol. Unfortunately, it doesn't pay anything for itself, nor does it double any wins with it, but this is something quite common with a lot of NetEnt games.

The Scatter symbol is one symbol that got my eyes opened. At first glance, it looked like the word 'pornstar', when actually it is 'xornsto'. That '*ornst*' letters lighted up the wrong word in my brain! Hahaha. Anyway, this too is a non-paying symbol, only serving to trigger 10 free spins with an Increasing Multiplier feature. Getting 2 or more Scatter symbols during the free spins increases the multiplier up to an incredible 20x! Nah, I've never gotten that far in my plays, but that would be the best time to hit those Super Mega Wins! Any retriggers during the free spins? Oh boy, you are a greedy one aren't you? Hahaha.

See that Key icon with the word 'Bonus'? Well, that is yet another non-paying symbol in the game, serving to trigger a Bonus game, whereby you choose a key to unlock a box to win prizes - 5 keys and 5 boxes, each held by a hooded being, either an angel or a devil. Pick the devil and you win nothing, but there's always at least 1 or 2 angels amongst them, so you won't be left with an empty pocket. The prizes can vary in size, from very small to very big, but I have no idea how big that can be. However, from what I have won, these could possibly be as much as 100x the total bet, so that's pretty good!

Even though the Wild, Scatter and Bonus symbols do not pay anything, which isn't to my liking, the highest symbol does have a good value of 4000x the line bet for 5 of them, so you need to get this symbols with that 3 Wild Reels to get the best wins. From my many plays on this Secret Code game, my best win still remains at 237x, but that is acceptable enough for me. Trying to get a much bigger win would require lots more play on the game, no doubt about that, but it is a good game to play!

Secret Code is another NetEnt game I'd forgotten all about until it popped up on the VideoSlots battle schedule just lately, and that's a real shame because it has many opportunities for great wins as well as a 4000x stake maximum win from a single spin available in the bonus mode although I'd be surprised if anybody has ever seen it as you'll need the maximum 20x multiplier in the free spins to achieve it and that is near on impossible to even get close to in my experience!

There are expanding wilds on reels 2, 3 and 4 but I found myself pretty surprised when they didn't expand on several occasions and when I studied the paytable there is a pretty cheeky catch to this - the wilds only expand to cover the whole reel if there is already a winning payline on the screen, they will NOT expand in order to create a win on an otherwise blank spin. That's a pretty strange setup that I don't recall seeing on any other slot and I do wonder if it can possibly have been necessary for NetEnt to implement this feature in that way.

The aforementioned free spins mode has a multiplier "up to" 20x, but the way it increases is also very unique - each time a scatter lands on the screen it adds an extra 1x, so for example if four scatters land on a single spin 4x is added to your multiplier for the remainder of the free spins. This is why I said it would be VERY unlikely for anybody to ever see the maximum 20x, although if your initiating spin is a five scatter hit then you might have a much better shot as it's possible to pick a higher starting multiplier.

Overall I think this this is one of the better NetEnt games, the base paytable definitely is better than the vast majority of their newer slots and I've had a few reasonably sized wins whilst playing it in the free tournaments at VideoSlots, enough to make me want to try the game for the first time in a couple of years in "real money" mode sometime soon!
