MGA Launches Consultation on 'Detailed Player Protection Guidelines'

The Malta Gaming Authority announced the launch of a closed consultation with licensees on the proposed amendments to the Player Protection Directive.

According to the regulator, the amendments are intended "to strengthen and clarify the current player protection framework" and feed into "the eventual publication of detailed player protection guidelines for Licensees."

Responsible Gambling and Five Markers of Harm

The first step in the process is to delve into the licensees' obligations regarding responsible gaming policies and procedures and the introduction of "five markers of harm." These markers, the MGA said, should be considered by licensees when creating measures and procedures to determine and address problem gambling.

Additionally, the regulator also included provisions relating to real-money reinforcement and staff training in the proposed amendments.

The amendments to responsible gambling policies have been proposed based on a review of the key sections of the gambling regulation carried out by an expert in the field, and MGA's research and experience gathered through the Responsible Gaming Unit's audits and familiarisation visits.

The consultation has already been launched and will give the opportunity to licensees to provide their feedback until 14 October 2022.
