Illuminous is one game that plays with 20 paylines but with a minimum starting bet of 0.02 coin value, or 0.40 bet per spin, very much like BetSoft games, so a number of low rolling players may not like this at all. Why Quickspin chose to make it so, I simply cannot understand - there's simply no logical reason for it, except to get revenues from players at twice the speed! Personally, I don't like it too, but I still tried the game out just for trying out sake, and to get one winning screenshot to write a review on it.

If you have played Quickspin's Hot Sync game before, then you'd know that this Illuminous game plays in about the same way too, but without the linked reels feature. The Wild and the Scatter have been combined into one symbol, the Bonus Wild symbol, acting as a Wild and a Scatter at the same time, appearing on reels 2, 3 and 4, but there is also the regular Wild symbol that can appear on any of the 5 reels. Getting 2 of Bonus Wild symbols on the reels awards a Respin, getting 3 awards 5 Respins. Getting 2 or 3 of these Bonus Wild symbols during a Respin would add more respins. So that's basically how the game plays and pays. As I soon found out, this Illuminous game tend to play in the same manner as Hot Sync game - good in the early stages of the game, getting worse and worse as you play more, and this I don't like at all!

The regular Wild and the Bonus Wild symbols both pay an extremely low 12.5x the total bet for getting any 5 of them, including the Purple Diamond too, the top paying regular symbol. All of the other symbols pay from 5x down to 1.25x the total bet for getting any 5 of them. You think you can get big wins with such extremely low win values? You'd be very lucky to get anything above 100x total bet win, that's for sure! I couldn't get any, even after several repeated tries, but once I had realised that this game was playing very much like Hot Sync, I immediately stopped playing it after getting one winning screenshot, which was my first intention anyway.

Similarly with that lousy Hot Sync game, I wouldn't want to touch this Illuminous game ever again! There is absolutely no point to carry on playing it, knowing very well that all payouts could only be small and mediocre ones, with almost zero possibility of getting anything more than 150x total bet win!

The symbols and theme of "Illuminous" remind me a lot of NetEnt's "Starburst" slot, but it didn't take very many spins for me to decide I liked this game a whole lot better than that one! There's much more to Illuminous, a decent feature for a start, and both the base game payouts and maximum win are somewhat higher than NetEnt's supposed classic. The graphics are good quality and the music stays nicely in the background - I didn't find myself rushing to turn it off like I do with so many games.

Hitting two scatters awards a free respin. The scatters do not stay in place so this doesn't give you an extra chance to hit a third scatter but the triggering reels do become "illuminated" which adds many extra wilds to the reels, often in a stacked configuration. It's also real nice that the scatter symbols in this game double up as a wild symbol (in addition to the games standard wild) making it much more likely you can hit a full line of wilds, although this only pays £5.00 at the minimum £0.40 bet.

When you do hit three or more scatters you are rewarded with five free spins - not the most generous deal around of course but the triggering reels again become "illuminated" with lots of wilds added, so if you manage to get four or five scatters you have an excellent chance of a big win. Also, during the free spin mode you only need a single scatter to award an a free respin rather than two, and the triggering reel can temporarily add an extra illuminated reel as well.

Although there's a lot to like about Illuminous I think the paytable could do with a little boost - it is definitely more rewarding than Starburst but still a medium-low variance game overall. I got quite a lot of slowdown whilst I was playing this, even the sound broke up on occasion which is very unusual for the machine I was using at the time. I tried closing down some other tabs and windows but the situation did not improve.

Like many other Quickspin slots you don't get the option to choose how many paylines you would like to play in "Illuminous". It's possible this is done because playing less lines would change the games RTP but I don't see any features in this game which should cause such an issue, so it could also just be lazy programming by the developers.

The slanted symbols make the reels feel very "wonky" to me, particularly next to the TJQKA symbols which are aligned straight - it can be a little bit disconcerting actually, I can imagine this machine doing my head in a little after a few drinks!

Illumious is an eye catching video slot for 20 galactic paylines. Come to think of this, did this come from Bejeweled's parent's, Bejeweled 3 and Bejeweled Twist? The music and sounds are very catchy but similar to the actual puzzle game and catching re-spins for 2 W bonus symbols are enough to groove for a few seconds!! 5 Free spins can be tough if I trigger say the bonus on reels 1, 4 and 5! This will only cause the wilds to appear on those reels as a full wild reel, a two part wild or just a single wild. I was a little dissapointed about this game. The free spins was hard to get when I played. And you get only 5 free games which I think is set to low. I think Quickspin software could add higher paytable into this game and the game would be great.

Now, if instead of 2, they appear 3 "bonus wild" symbols, then it is triggered a round of 5 free spins during which we will have these 3 reels receiving the same hot reel effect and everything works exactly to the above feature, only difference is one additional hot reel highly increases the possibility of a big win. I consider exceptional this round, but I think it's not enough to offset the decrease in our balance caused by the inflated value of the total bet.
