Italian Serie A History
Although Serie A has been played since 1898, the key date is the 1929-30 season, as that was the first one that was contested on a fully national level rather than split into regional sections.
The number of clubs contesting Serie A has changed over the years, at various times being 16, 18, 20, and 21 (solely for the 1947-48 season) before the Italian Football Federation settled on 20 in 2004, the number of teams contesting it ever since then.
There have been 93 Serie A season played to date and only Inter Milan have played every single one of them. Juventus, famously relegated to Serie B in 2006-7 after the Calciopoli scandal but promoted back to Serie A in 2007-8, therefore ‘only’ played in 92 of them, the same as Roma. AC Milan have played in 91 Serie A seasons.
Juventus hold the record for being the most frequent Scudetto winners, having won 36 times, to go with 21 runner-up spots. The two Milans- AC and Inter – are next on 19 and 20 titles, respectively. 16 different teams have won Serie A over the years.
The Criteria We Use When Choosing the Best Serie A Betting Sites
If you’re planning on betting on Serie A, the first step is to choose a good sportsbook that not only ticks every box from what you’d want in a sportsbook in general but one that also offers a great product specifically for Italian Serie A betting. These are some of the most important elements we consider when writing our Sportsbook reviews.
- Licence: Ideally, it holds the UK Gambling Commission one or the Malta Gaming Authority one, as these are the ones we consider the hardest to obtain and a good indication that it’s a safe site that does things by the book. Other licences are also welcome because they indicate that the sportsbook is regulated by a gambling authority.
- Offers: Ideally, the Serie A betting site has a generous welcome offer made up of free bets or other bonuses that make it worth your while to sign up with them. Hopefully, they also carry on offering plenty of varied, good-value promotions after that, such as extra free bets, Odds Boosts, Best Odds Guaranteed, and money-back specials, giving you ‘freebies’ on a consistent basis.
- Lots of sports, markets and high odds: Serie A betting aside, customers enjoy betting on lots of different sports, including more niche ones like surfing, table tennis, squash or field hockey, so the bookie should offer all of these, plus of course the more mainstream ones. And the more sports competitions to bet on within those sports, the better. They should also offer lots of different betting markets and types of bets (accas, Patent Bets, Bet Builders, etc) and of course, offer generous odds across the board.
- Good Serie A product: Any good Serie A betting site will have betting on all Serie A matches with decent Serie A betting odds. But you also want a good choice of outright and match markets, plus valuable Serie A content like live streaming of their games, Serie A betting tips and Serie A betting predictions on their blog, or useful stats to consider.

Serie A Betting - How Does It Work?
All sports betting sites covering Serie A will offer a combination of outright markets and match-specific markets. Outright markets are ones which apply to the season as a whole rather than a particular match. The good news is that outright markets sometimes offer greater value to the true expert if you’re able to predict what will happen over a long period given the Serie A season lasts over nine months.
The bad news is that unless you can Cash Out your bet early, something which you won’t always be able to do, you’ll have to wait a long time to receive your payout if the outright bet wins.
Most Popular Betting Markets for Serie A
Here’s a quick look at the top Serie A betting markets on a season-long and match-by-match basis.
Serie A Outright Markets
Here are some of the most popular long-term markets for Serie A online betting:
- Serie A Winner: Who will be crowned champion that season?
- Serie A Top Goal Scorer: Which player will score the most goals over the course of the season?
- Serie A Relegation: Which three teams will be relegated to Serie B at the end of the season? Of course, you don’t have to pick all three; each bet you place is completely separate from the others.
- Top 4 Finish: Will the named team finish in the Top 4 at the end of the campaign?
Serie A Match Markets
These are the most common and popular markets when betting on an individual match in Serie A.
- Match Winner: Also known as 1x2 or match odds, you’re betting on whether Team A or Team B will win the game, or whether it will be a draw. This is by far the most popular type of football betting.
- Double Chance: Here you cover two of the three possible outcomes in one bet. For example, if Juventus are playing Milan, you can have a Juventus/Draw Double Chance bet, meaning it would only lose if Juventus lost.
- Over/Under 2.5 Goals: Will there be more (over) or less (under) than three goals in the match?
- Both Teams to Score: ‘Yes’ means both teams score at least one goal each (e.g. 1-1, 2-1, 3-3) and ‘No’ means that at least one team won’t concede (e.g. 0-0, 1-0, 3-0, 0-3).
- Correct Score: What will be the exact score at the final whistle? 1-0, 1-1, 2-2, 4-2, or another?
- First Goal Scorer: Which player will score the first goal of the match? If the game ends 0-0 or 1-0 and the only goal of the match is an own goal, the winning runner is the ‘no goal scorer’ selection.

Serie A Betting Tips
If you bet on Series A outright markets or on matches early in the season, we suggest that you look into the statistics from the previous year. While it’s okay to bet on the team you support, the Italian league is unpredictable and even though there are favourites every season, it doesn’t mean that they will win at the end.
The top teams are very close, and it can be very crowded at the top of the table, especially for the places that guarantee a spot in UEFA’s competitions for the next season. The odds for clubs finishing the season in the top 4 will likely change during the season, so if you follow closely, you can snatch them at the right moment.
Inter Milan may have comfortably won the title in the 2023/24 season, and they are the even-money favourites with most Serie A betting sites this season, but with some changes made during the summer, such as Antonio Conte taking over at Napoli, the title race might have just become more exciting this season.
If you are looking to bet on goals markets, Inter Milan and Juventus could be excellent candidates for clean sheets this season if they maintain their trends from the previous season. For other goal markets, keep an eye out on the early matches to notice the teams’ goal-scoring trends and the strength of their defending lines, and this should help you make your bets.
