Between 1984 and 2000, there were either just three or four competing teams, and between 2004 and 2023, there were four, five or six.

For the last three editions, there were six teams, with Nepal and Afghanistan participating for the first time ever in 2023 and 2014, respectively. There will be eight teams in the Asia Cup 2025, with Oman and Hong Kong joining Afghanistan, plus regulars India, Pakistan, the UAE, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh; Nepal missed out on qualifying this time round.

In 2018, 2022 and 2023, it was played with six participating teams, where two groups of three teams contested the Group Stages, with the top 2 advancing to the Super Four Stage and the top 2 from those progressing to the final.

The 2025 Asia Cup cricket tournament will be contested by eight teams. That means there will be two groups of four, with the top 2 from each group advancing to the Super 4 stage, which, like the group stages, follows the round-robin format of each team playing each other once.
