History of The Asia Cup

The first-ever edition of the Asia Cup was held in Sharjah, in the United Arab Emirates, in 1984. It aimed to be both a non-cricketing event, promoting goodwill among Asian Countries, and a chance to crown the cricket champion of Asia on a regular basis.

Up to 2009, the Asia Cup tournament didn’t have a fixed schedule, meaning that, for example, it was not held between 1990 and 1995.

But in 2009, the Asian Cricket Council decided that it would be held every two years from then on. Crucially, it was also decided that the tournament would be played on a rotational basis going forward, shifting between the ODI format of 50 overs and the T20I format of 20 overs.

India are the defending champions, having thrashed Sri Lanka in Colombo in the 2023 final, which was played in the ODI format.

Asia Cup Tournament Format

Between 1984 and 2000, there were either just three or four competing teams, and between 2004 and 2023, there were four, five or six.

For the last three editions, there were six teams, with Nepal and Afghanistan participating for the first time ever in 2023 and 2014, respectively. There will be eight teams in the Asia Cup 2025, with Oman and Hong Kong joining Afghanistan, plus regulars India, Pakistan, the UAE, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh; Nepal missed out on qualifying this time round.

In 2018, 2022 and 2023, it was played with six participating teams, where two groups of three teams contested the Group Stages, with the top 2 advancing to the Super Four Stage and the top 2 from those progressing to the final.

The 2025 Asia Cup cricket tournament will be contested by eight teams. That means there will be two groups of four, with the top 2 from each group advancing to the Super 4 stage, which, like the group stages, follows the round-robin format of each team playing each other once. The top 2 from this stage then advance to the final.

How We Rate Asia Cup Betting Sites

When it comes to all sports betting, we here at AskGamblers are always on the lookout for the best sites to recommend to our readers.

As regards Asia Cup betting, we give more importance to bonuses, markets, odds and features at betting sites that are directly related to the Asia Cup 2025 rather than a sportsbook’s offering in more general terms. Here are the most important factors we consider.

  • The odds: Consistently getting better odds than the market average is essential to your long-term P&L, whether that’s in general or just relating to Asia Cup cricket betting.  So, bookies frequently offering the best price on Asia Cup 2025 markets get plenty of brownie points.
  • Range of markets: Any sportsbook worth its salt will at the very least offer the match winner market for all of the Asia Cup 2025 cricket matches, plus a couple of staples like the first innings runs market and the winner of the toss. But the best sites for Asia Cup 2025 betting will also offer plenty more. The more, the better.
  • Free bets and other bonuses: Not many sportsbooks will have offers related directly to the Asia Cup 2025, such as Odds Boosts on a particular match or top batsman, or cashback offers. If they don’t, they should at least have free bets and other bonuses that can be used on any sport, which, of course, includes cricket.
  • Live betting: With more money often being traded in live betting than pre-match on cricket matches, a good live betting product is essential. That includes lots of in-play markets, odds that are updated quickly, live stats and in some cases, live streaming of Asia Cup 2025 cricket matches.

Popular Betting Markets for the Asia Cup 2025

And now let’s have a look at what might be some of the more popular betting markets for this competition.

Outright Winner

Whether it’s a couple of weeks before the tournament starts or after it’s already underway, you can try to pick the overall winner.

Match Winner

Which team will win in all of the 19 matches played at the Asia Cup 2025? Remember that there are no draws in T20 cricket, so if it’s tied after 40 overs, it will go to a Super Over to find a winner.

Top Batsman

Who will score the most runs for each of the two sides? In the case of a tie for number of runs, the two batsmen with the most runs will be dead-heated.

Top Bowler

Who will take the most wickets for their respective team? If there’s a tie with two or more bowlers taking the same number of wickets, one of two things can happen depending on the Asia Cup 2025 betting site: either the bet will be dead-heated, or the winner is the bowler who conceded the fewest runs.

First Innings Runs

This is very much a live betting market where you need to predict how many runs the team batting first will score. So, if it was Sri Lanka v Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were batting first, the line for Sri Lanka runs in the T20 format might be 170.5.

Then it’s up to you to decide whether Sri Lanka’s runs will be more or less than that figure, with both options very close to even money.

Asia Cup 2025 Betting Tips

And now to some useful tips for you to get the most out of your experience when betting on the Asia Cup 2025.

Have Accounts With at Least Two Bookmakers

Having at least two accounts allows you to compare odds across the two of them, so you can always bet at the highest odds of the two. It also means you can claim twice the bonuses. Check our sportsbook reviews to help decide which sites you want to have accounts at.

Team News, Pitch Report and Conditions Are Essential

Like with any other team sport, the absence of key players can negatively affect their team’s chances. The wicket- the patch of grass the bowler bowls on - will either favour a high-scoring game with lots of runs or a low-scoring one where the bowlers have an advantage.

Whether it’s rainy, sunny or overcast affects how the ball moves so it is also of great importance. Being informed about all these factors, whether through cricket sites, tipping sites or TV commentary, can be priceless.

Check Head-to-Head Records and Stats

Head-to-head records between two teams can make a huge difference. For example, Bangladesh has played India 17 times in T20Is and has only beaten them once. So, you know that if/when this fixture comes about, Bangladesh won’t be a wise bet, almost irrespective of the odds.

Stats are also important when it comes to players. A batsman with an excellent record in the Asia Cup in general, against a particular team or at a particular ground rates a better Top Batsman bet than one with a poor record as per those metrics.

Key Records in Asia Cup History

Here are some good stats relating to the Asia Cup.

  • Sri Lanka is the only side to have played in all 16 editions.
  • India has won the tournament 8 times, more than anyone else.
  • Sri Lanka has the best win rate of any team at the Asia Cup in the ODI format with a 67.85% win rate, just a bit better than India’s 66.98%.
  • India has the best win rate when it’s been played as T20Is, with an 80% win rate, with Sri Lanka next best: 60%.
  • Sri Lanka also boasts the top run scorer in the history of the tournament in Sanath Jayasuriya (1220 runs) and top wicket-taker, Lasith Malinga, with 33.
