Belgian Pro League Format Overview

It was formed in 1895, meaning it is one of the oldest leagues around, with a long history behind it. 

Anderlecht is by far the most successful club in its history, with 31 league titles, with Club Brugge next best with 19, which included winning the league in 2023/24. 

A key year in the Belgian Pro League was 2009/2010 when significant changes were made to the league’s pre-existing format. 

The first of those was a reduction in the number of teams from 18 to 16. Those 16 teams now play each other twice (home and away) during the regular season, between late July and April. 

An even bigger difference to the previous format is that after April, the Top 6 from the regular season contest a round-robin playoff with teams carrying half their points from the regular season into the Championship playoff. The winner of that is crowned the Belgian champion. 

Previously, that resulted in a place into the Champions League (CL) final qualifying round but with the CL competitions’ own change of format and expansion in 2024-25, the Championship play-off winners now go directly into the main Champions League competition. The runners-up go to the Third Qualifying Round of the CL. 

The teams finishing third and fourth in the Championship playoff enter different qualifying stages of the Europa League.

From 2023 onwards, relegation is determined by the teams finishing between 13th and 16th also facing off in a playoff. The bottom two are relegated straight away to the Challenger Pro League, while the team finishing 14th plays the third-placed team from the Challenger Pro League for the right to remain in the top division.

For example, despite not winning a Belgian Pro League since the playoff system was introduced in 2009, Standard Liege averages more points per game (1.63) in the Championship playoffs than any other team, bar Club Brugge (1.7). However, several other teams have gone on to win it, whereas Liege hasn’t.

Does a team score more goals when playing at home than away? Which teams had the most clean sheets in the previous season? Maybe those trends will continue in the next season, as well.
