UEFA Nations League Format - How Does it Work?

The UEFA Nations League 2024-25 was contested by 54 national teams across 156 matches played in this edition. The next few editions of the UEFA Nations League will follow the same format until further notice.

Those 54 teams start by being divided into four groups. Group A is the top group, and Group D is the weakest one. Groups A, B and C each have 16 teams, divided into four sub-groups of four, while Group D operates slightly differently, being made up of just six teams, split into two groups of three.

The winners and runners-up of each of the sub-groups in Group A advance to the quarter-finals, where the group winner teams are seeded ahead of the draw; the group winners also get to play the second of the two legs at home, which is seen as an advantage.

The winners of those four quarter-finals then progress to the Nations League Finals, where two-legged semis are played once again, followed by the big one-off 2025 UEFA Nations League final. The losers of the semi-finals contest a Third/Fourth Place playoff on the same day of the final and at the same ground.

There’s also a promotion and relegation system in place. The worst-ranked team from each of the sub-groups in A, B and C are automatically relegated, while the winners of the sub-groups in Groups B, C and D automatically go up a division.

In the other groups, the third-placed team from the group plays the runner-up from the group below it in a two-legged playoff.

The playoff winners remain in the group they were in if they were in the higher group or are promoted if they are in the lower group. If a team was in the higher group and lost the playoff, they’re relegated to the lower group.

The teams in bold are the ones that won the group. In the case of Group A, they qualify for the quarter-finals. In the case of the other groups, they are promoted to the division above.

The runners-up have a chance of being promoted to the higher division. In the case of the Group A runners-up, they also qualify for the quarter-finals.

Teams that finished third in their respective groups either stay in the division they are currently in (Leagues C and D) or contest a relegation playoff (in Leagues A and B).

Teams that finished last are relegated, with the exception of those from Group D, which can’t be further relegated as it’s already the bottom division.
