GambleAware hands over by March 2026

Government Set to Take Over from GambleAware by 2026

A leading independent British charity focused on reducing gambling-related harm, GambleAware has announced they’re it's stepping aside. The charity will hand over all its responsibilities to the UK government by 31 March 2026, following the launch of a new mandatory levy on gambling operators.

Three new commissioners will oversee gambling harm efforts in England, Scotland, and Wales.

A £100M Gamble Harm Levy Is on the Table

In November 2024, the government planned to raise £100 million with a new gambling levy, charging 0.1% to 1.1% of profits depending on the activity.

Baroness Twycross, Minister for Gambling, confirmed the levy would be fully operational by 6 April 2026.

GambleAware Backs the Move

GambleAware has backed a legal levy for years. Chair Andy Boucher said the group will close by 31 March 2026, and added:

We have advocated for the introduction of a statutory system for many years.

Since 2017, GambleAware has helped tens of thousands of people through treatment and prevention work. They’ll continue their support until the new system is fully implemented.

Resources Stay Live - the Mission Continues

GambleAware's focus remains on ensuring a smooth handover, keeping services stable and accessible for everyone in need. Their website and essential prevention tools will stay active.

They’ve urged NHS England and others to keep up the work and prevent gambling addiction long term.

They also welcome the government’s broader view - putting gambling harms on the public health agenda, funded through a statutory system instead of voluntary donations.

Government Pays Tribute to GambleAware

Baroness Twycross praised the charity’s efforts, saying:

The new levy system will build on the successes of the current system to improve and expand efforts to further understand, tackle and treat harmful gambling.

GambleAware has tirelessly delivered services for those affected by gambling issues. Hopefully, the government will continue in that direction.
