A research paper compiled by Bournemouth University and commissioned by GambleAware has called for greater transparency regarding online games and promotional materials on gambling websites.
Genuine Probability, Educational Content, and More
The GambleAware-commissioned research paper was envisioned as a review of how safer gambling messages are delivered and the extent of transparency excited by operators in providing information to customers.
Key recommendations from the paper said that gambling operators should give information about the “genuine probability” of winning rather than exaggerated return rates.
Also, researchers noted that operators should provide customers with educational content targeting gamblers’ misconceptions of how casino games work and informing them about potential risks of gambling and safer gambling behaviour.
Educational content about gambling misconceptions and genuine probability figures are among the key takeaways from the research paper.
Zoë Osmond, Chief Executive of GambleAware, said “the report makes some important recommendations for gambling operators to place greater focus and importance on safer gambling messages on their websites and ensure people are aware of the risks.
“This research serves as further proof that we need to see the gambling White Paper published as soon as possible to avoid further gambling harm,” Osmond underlined.
The research also noted that previous research of the gambling industry had highlighted operators' use of unfair or misleading promotional tools, such as free play offers and unclear pay-out rates, on top of the lack of corporate social responsibility policies.
