GambleAware recently launched a new app aimed at preventing gambling-related harms, intended primarily for 18-24-year-olds, but without leaving any demographics behind.
Fighting Gambling Harms with Modern Tools
Although drawing on research that showed 18-24-year-olds are twice as likely to want to reduce or quit gambling compared to other age groups, GambleAware's new app offers free and anonymous support to users of all ages looking to either reduce or quit gambling entirely, the charity said.
GambleAware Support Tool works by allowing users to set personal goals, by tracking their activity and logging the frequency and spend of their gambling.
As they feed data into the app, the users are given advice to make more informed decisions to reduce or stop gambling.
The app offers users a personalised experience and is the first app to be developed in line with Lower Risk Gambling Guidelines (LRGG), which outline three rules users should follow if they wish to reduce the risk of harm while continuing to gamble:
- gambling no more than 1% of one's income per month,
- gambling a maximumum of four days per month,
- avoiding more than two different types of gambling per month.
According to, available data, 48% of all users aged between 18 and 24 cite wanting to save money as their main motivation to change their gambling habits, with another 27% of respondents saying they want to 'feel happier'.
Data-Driven Approach
The development of GambleAware's app relied on two surveys: the 2024 Treatment and Support survey, which showed that 29% of 18-24-year-olds want to either slow their gambling activity or stop entirely; and the 2023 Audience Segmentation report, which revealed that 93% of the total of people who want to reduce or stop gambling (4.5 million) wanted to do so without relying on a treatment service.
"The digital age means we essentially have a casino in our pocket, and we know increased accessibility leads to increased participation and therefore increased risk of harm," said Alexia Clifford, GambleAware chief communications officer, commenting on the launch.
GambleAware Support Tool is free to download on both iOS and Android devices.
