Spooky themed games no doubt receive a boost at this time of year with Halowe'en fever taking hold in the majority of countries throughout the world, so this is surely a good time to release a game featuring witches and spells if you are hoping to benefit from maximum exposure with the minimum of outside promotion. Being one of the smaller developers in the on-line slot world, Playson have the chance to benefit enormously from this kind of "organic" promotion and so I felt sure that they would impress me with this new game Spellcraft.

Not sure if it was just my internet playing up but I definitely noticed this game seemed to take an awful long time to finish it's loading sequence - I must have read the explanations of the games WILD, BONUS and SCATTER features fifty times whilst I was tapping my fingers waiting for this game to load and I found myself wondering if I might have been better off watching the introduction video!

Once the game did load up and I began to spin the reels I was impressed by the fluidity of the animation and high frame rate which might go some way to explaining the longer than average load time. The graphics themselves also looked to be of a very high resolution too and there is a decidedly spooky backing soundtrack too, not really something you could describe as music but that's not necessarily a bad thing as it didn't become repetitive within five minutes as most slot backing music does.

And the winnings? I played the game at the minimum bet of 0.27, a strange number but no doubt a result of the 27 fixed paylines the game offers and at this betsize the top book symbol pays 400 coins for a five of a kind - only 13x your bet or thereabouts - although the paytable strangely describes a 6 of a kind hit too which intrigued me seeing as the game has only five reels! Apparently you need to enter the "ghost reel" mode in order to land one of these special combinations, and to do so you'll need to hit three or more scatters and enter free spins mode, so of course I felt determined to play the game until I achieved this!

A few hundred spins later I still hadn't managed to hit three scatters, I did manage three of the "bonus" symbols more than once during this time but was getting pretty impatient for to see the ghost reel mode and decided to up my bet to 0.81 per spin in the hope the game would treat me to a free spins round with triple the payout goodness... which it did!

Unfortunately though the end result wasn't quite so exciting - just 32x my bet and not a single six of a kind, although I did only get the minimum nine free spins. I decided to call it quits on Spellcraft at this point as I felt I had seen everything the game had to offer and in all honesty really wasn't all that impressed. It's a really well presented game and the "ghost reel" does add a little excitement, but a multiplier or some stacked wilds would really have improved this game dramatically.
