From 1909 to 1931, gambling in Nevada was banned. After lifting the ban, the casino simply continued its operators.
Golden Gate Hotel and Casino is a historic building that paved the way for other casinos to be established in Vegas.
Soon after reopening, the state saw other casinos enter the stage. There was El Cortez, which started working in 1941. Some consider this one to be the oldest casino in Vegas because it never changed its name and never closed its doors, while Hotel Nevada did seize operators and went to rebranding in the 1950s.
As for El Cortez, the casino is notorious for its mobster owners such as Bugsy Siegel, Meyer Lansky, Gus Greenbaum and Moe Sedway.
The Oldest Casino on the Strip
Although Golden Gate Hotel and Casino was the first to open, it’s not located on the Strip. As you’re walking the most popular Vegas street with many massive casinos, you should know that the first one in this area was The Flamingo.
