Vermont Gets a Step Closer to Legalising Sports Betting

Days ago, Vermont lawmakers received an initial draft of recommendations from the Sports Betting Study Committee, established to research sports betting strategies for a potential market. The legislators will now use these suggestions to draft Vermont sports betting bills and proposals.

The Six Recommendations

The committee's findings, submitted to the General Assembly last week, set out recommendations concerning the potential betting market in Vermont, comparing betting practices and from the neighbouring states.

Among the recommendations is establishing a state-controlled market, with the Department of Liquor and Lottery as the administrative authority overseeing sports wagering.

Vermont remains the only New England region without a single form of betting.

Furthermore, the committee said Vermont should legalise mobile and online sports betting, and also allow sports wagering at brick-and-mortar venues.

Finally, the study suggested that Great Mountain State should set up a revenue share through the competitive bidding process and adopt comprehensive measures for responsible gambling.

The next step for lawmakers is to draft a bill which would have to be approved by both House and Senate.
