Slot Speed Kills Momentum (How NeverEnding Fixed It)

Various slot components determine whether players stay or leave. From theme and story to features, RTP, and volatility, every segment needs to be set up just right.

But there’s one aspect which is often overlooked: spin latency. We sat down with Oleksandr Zaburannyi, the CTA at NeverEnding, who talked about spin latency, how they reduced it from 3 seconds to 0.35 seconds, and what that meant for players.

1. Please explain what spin latency is and why it's important in online slots.

It's the gap between hitting spin and actually seeing the result. Behind that gap: a request to the server, a transaction, an RNG result coming back, then the reels render. The player never sees any of those steps, they just feel the total as either instant or laggy.

And it's a blind spot for the industry. Everyone compares RTP and commercial terms between providers. Almost nobody checks how fast a spin resolves. RTP is a promise about the math over time. Latency is what the player feels on every single spin, right now.

2. Players don't usually sit there with a stopwatch measuring seconds, but they definitely notice when a game feels heavy or sluggish. From a player's perspective, what does a 3-second spin latency actually do to gameplay?

It kills the rhythm. Spin, result, spin again, that pace is half of what makes a slot feel good. Three seconds of watching reels that are technically still loading turns that rhythm into a wait. The player stops playing and starts waiting for permission to play.

We didn't have to guess at the effect, we saw it in the numbers. Same games, same operator, same period, average activity per player jumped from 102 spins to 258 once the lag was gone. Nothing about the game changed. Only the wait did.

3. Guide us on how NeverEnding managed to reduce spin response times from 3 seconds down to 0.35 seconds and talk about the effects, including player engagement.

Two moves. First, we found where the time was actually going: two transactions per spin, each one eating about 1.45 seconds on the partner's side. We worked with them directly to cut that to 0.25 seconds per transaction, which alone brought total spin time down to 0.6 seconds.

Then we went structural, and merged those two transactions into one. That halved the round-trip again and landed us at 0.35 seconds, down from 3.

The result speaks for itself: 102 spins per player became 258, same titles, same window. That's not a marginal gain from a technical tweak. That's a different game, running on the exact same content.

4. Developers often build games in pristine, optimised test environments that don't match real-world player conditions. How do they ensure slot spins quickly enough for players to stay engaged?

This is where a lot of providers trip up, and it's an easy trap. You test locally, everything's fast, everything looks great, and you assume it stays that way live. It doesn't. Real networks have variance, real infrastructure has real load, and none of that shows up until actual players are spinning.

The fix is simple to say, harder to actually commit to: test in live-adjacent conditions, not ideal ones, and keep watching latency in production, not just at launch. If you only ever test where everything's fast, you'll only ever catch the problems your players never see.

5. Any advice to players on how to make a distinction between slow Wi-Fi and spin latency?

Check for consistency. Bad Wi-Fi is erratic, fast one moment, crawling the next, and it drags down everything on your connection, not just one game. Real spin latency is steady. If one title is reliably slower than everything else you're running, same connection, same time, that's not your Wi-Fi. That's the game.
