SOFTSWISS Reports: Slots Capture Over 80% of the Online Casino Market

Online slots were the most popular type of casino games in 2023, the new research by SOFTSWISS confirms. Players definitely prefer their reels over table games, as slots captured a massive 85.56% piece of the online casino pie last year.

This research was conducted by analyzing the data SOFTSWISS collects via its Game Aggregator and included 300 casinos and 16,500 online casino games.

Slots Rule!

Throughout 2023 slots were consistently at the top of the leaderboards by both Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) and total number of bets.

Among various big game providers, Pragmatic Play stood out as the most prominent one. Two of Pragmatic Play’s games - Gates of Olympus and Sweet Bonanza - recorded the biggest success within the player base.

According to SOFTSWISS’s data, these are the 10 most popular casino games right now:

  • Gates of Olympus
  • Sweet Bonanza
  • Aviator
  • Crazy Time
  • Roleta Brasileira
  • Sugar Rush
  • Starlight Princess 1000
  • Fortune Tiger
  • Book of Dead
  • Bonanza Billion

Of these games, seven are online slots, two are live casino games, and Aviator is a crash-type betting game.

Crash games are an interesting topic. They’ve risen to third place in overall popularity (right behind live casino games), with the aforementioned Aviator being the most recognized game in this genre. Although its popularity isn’t as steady as that of slot games, Aviator is still in the top 10 in early 2024 and will likely continue to dominate the charts.

High Rollers are at the Live Casino

A staple of every good online casino site is the live casino section. Seasoned players love the immersive, interactive experience those games offer, making the live dealer games the second biggest casino category of 2023.

From various table games, roulette and card games hold the players’ attention the most. Those are the classics, after all. More surprising is the fact that players at live casino games tend to bet much higher and play riskier than slot players. The average sum players bet at live casinos was €49.95, while the average slot bet was just €0.75.

Tatyana Kaminskaya from SOFTSWISS Game Aggregator said:

While slots continue to reign supreme in the gaming world, the diversity we see among the top-ranked games highlights the varied interests of our players.

Kaminskaya added that, if casinos wish to provide a rich gaming experience to their players, they must maintain a diverse portfolio of games. This not only helps attract new players but keeps the regulars entertained, without them seeking other venues.
