Gears of Horus Review—Editor’s Impressions
Gamers have been spoilt for choice over the last few years. We’ve seen the list of Megaways slots grow on an almost weekly basis and it seems to have inspired developers to make their game grids bigger. Such is the case with Gears of Horus, a slot that takes the beloved ancient Egyptian theme, adds a steampunk twist, and spices things up with features such as Tumbling Reels, Colossal Wilds, and free spins. Check out our Gears of Horus slots review for more info on this promising title.
Overview of Gears of Horus Game
Brought to us by the creative minds over at Pragmatic Play, Gears of Horus doesn’t use traditional slot paylines or slot reels. It adopts a Cluster Pays mechanic, and you win by connecting matching symbols in “clusters” (vertical and horizontal) of at least 5. The Red Emblem pays the most, but there is also a Wild that delivers sizeable payouts on its own and substitutes for the other main game symbols.
Gears of Horus RTP, Payout, and Volatility
Although the game’s aesthetics and features are exceptional, the Gears of Horus RTP is average at best. It’s fixed at 96.06%—not low but not notable either. It drops ever-so-slightly if you take the “Buy Feature” option, becoming just 96.02%. The developers have set the volatility as very high (5/5) and there’s a maximum payout of 10,000x.
Gears of Horus Graphics and Gaming Experience
Gears of Horus slots adopt an ancient Egyptian theme, but with a steampunk twist, making for a very unique and interesting aesthetic. Everything from the turning cogs to the folky soundtrack adds to the experience and provides an enjoyable game that immerses you from the very first spin.
Gears of Horus Bonus Features
The main feature on Gears of Horus is a Tumble feature, also known as Cascading Reels, and it is active during the base game and the free spins. It works by destroying all winning symbols as soon as they form a match. New ones then drop down onto the reels and if there are more wins, it repeats.
You’ll see the cogs turn during a win. If you get enough of them, these cogs open additional reels, expanding the game grid for that spin.
Random Colossal Wilds also appear during the base game. These symbols work like regular Wilds but fill more spaces and thus have a much bigger impact.
Gears of Horus Free Spins
Trigger the free spins feature by landing at least 3 Scatters. You’ll get 8 spins for 3 Scatters, but this increases to 12 and 20 for 4 and 5. Every time you reveal a winning combination during the feature, a multiplier is added, beginning at 1x, and moving to a possible 5x. The multiplier resets when there are no more wins, but it starts up again on the new spin.
The Scatter is active during the feature and if you reveal more of them, additional spins will be added to your total.
If you’re unable to activate the free spins organically, you can buy the feature (not available in all jurisdictions). As noted above, the Gears of Horus RTP drops a little when you take this option. It’s also expensive, costing 100x your wager size.

Gears of Horus: Scarabs, Flaps and Wild Appearances! A Steampunk Egyptian Slot!
Gears of Horus, where ancient Egypt meets the robotic future and the Jetsons! As a self-proclaimed slot enthusiast with a penchant for the peculiar, this Pragmatic Play creation had me at "golden mechanical scarab."
So, you're spinning away on a 6x6 grid, minding your own business, when suddenly, BAM! You hit a cluster of 5 symbols and the game decides to go all Transformers on you. Four flaps dramatically unfurl per win like a pharaoh's grand reveal, expanding the grid and exposing more symbols. It's exactly like watching a mummy unwrap itself, only less creepy, undead and potentially more on the cash side.
Keep those wins coming, and before you know it you're staring at an 8x8 colossus of a board. And just when you think it can't get any wilder, the game throws in some wild symbols for good measure. During one particularly lucky spin, I landed a 3x4 wild block that paid out a whopping 106.1x my persistent $0.20 bets. Talk about a pyramid scheme I can get behind!
For the free spins, three golden scarabs will net you 8 free spins and they seem to pop up more often than a cat meme on the internet. However, don't get too excited as these free spins can be as unpredictable as a camel's mood. While the base game showered me with wind blowing sand and eye-catching wins, the free spins were about as generous as a sphinx with a riddle.
One gripe for Gears of Horus: the multipliers in the free spins reset after each round. Come on, Pragmatic Play, throw us a big bone here for us! A persistent multiplier throughout would be much sweeter than finding a quenching oasis in the desert.
Despite this minor setback, Gears of Horus allowed me to visit this slot much more. Maybe it was the frequent wins, or perhaps it was the oddly soothing "Egypt meets robot apocalypse" soundtrack. Whatever the reason, I found myself drawn to this mechanical menagerie time and time again. Even to this day I still honor it despite a Pragmatic Play slot but I sure wish they'd revise this slot to have better free spins!
Overall to all players, Gears of Horus is a delightful romp through a steampunk Egypt that's more fun than a mummy's unwrapping party. A mummy dressed administrator wouldn't be so bad either! ;) It's a neat treat that'll have you saying, "Walk like an Egyptian? Nah, I'd rather spin like one!"
