Erik The Red: Ice Cold Fjord-tunes Await!
To all slot enthusiasts who enjoy Relax Gaming! Prepare to set course on a frosty adventure with Erik the Red, a Viking-themed slot that'll have you shouting "Skål!" (A toast of friendship and goodwill) faster than you can say "jackpot" via an agreeable nod, about 35% of that!
This 2018 release from Relax Gaming is a 5-reel, 20-payline voyage that's colder than a polar bear's toenails but hotter than a dragon's breath when it comes to potential wins on a bonus.
Imagine this for a moment: you're surrounded by towering icebergs, with longships bobbing on a frigid lake. It's enough to make you reach for a virtual fur coat! But fear not, brave warrior, for Erik the Red and his wife are here to guide you through this frozen frontier. The kind of cold setting I personally enjoy!
Now, let's be really honest here, the base game will leave you feeling as numb as a Viking's nose in winter. But hold onto your horned helmets, because the real aspects of Erik The Red begins in the free spins! Here's where you'll want to channel your inner berserker and collect those scatter symbols like they're the last mead barrels in Valhalla. Each scatter collections of that reel bestows persistent wild reels, turning the game from a gentle fjord into a roaring maelstrom of winnings.
But beware! While a full screen of expanding wilds might seem rarer than a warm day in Greenland, it's not the Ragnarök-sized payout you might expect or the Ragnarök ending you'd find in Thor: Ragnarök which was the only way to defeat Hela. At around 100x the stake, it's more of a "nice haul" than a "legendary loot". The maximum win of 959x your stake is the true find here, though you might need Odin's wisdom to unearth it.
Overall, Erik the Red is like a Viking feast, it might start slow but once the mead (read: free spins) starts flowing, it's a rollicking good time! It may not be the most bountiful raid in the slot world, but it's engaging enough to keep anyone spinning until the fjords freeze over.
Get your best fur coat, probably a parka, your best weapon and join Erik on this icy escapade. It may not make you rich enough to buy Greenland, but it's sure to provide some frosty fun! This slot scores a solid 8 out of 10! Not quite legendary, but certainly worth a Viking voyage or two!
Over the years, I have played and tried out many of Relax Gaming games, liking some but not liking many others. I’ve also missed taking many screenshots of my earlier wins simply because all reviews at Askgamblers had been suspended by then, but are now back again. So here I go replaying back those games, just to write reviews on them.
The thing I like about Relax Gaming games is that the minimum starting bet is just 0.10 per spin, well within my small budget capacity. Take this Erik The Red game for example. It plays with 5 reels, 4 rows and with 20 paylines, but the minimum bet is not 0.20. What I also like is that there are no Extra Bet or Bonus Buy feature in this game, so the base game itself would play normally as designed, and not be heavily biased towards those buy-in options.
Other than that, I must say that I am very disappointed to see such extremely low win values of all the symbols in play. The Scatters don’t pay anything, the Wilds only appear during the free spins and pay only 5x for a 5-of-a-kind win, whilst Erik, the top regular symbol, pays only 4x! How on earth can Relax Gaming ever do such a thing to this Erik’s game?! Such win values are usually used in very high volatility clusters pay and megaways games, not in standard games! It’s insane!
Don’t agree with me? Let’s take a closer look then. Getting all 20 symbols of the top Erik symbol would pay a ridiculously low win of only 80x the bet. Getting 5 full Wild Reels in the free spins game would pay an even more ridiculous win of only 100x! Completely senseless and unbelievable! To make up for this insanity, all symbols are of the stacked kind, so getting all the same 20 symbols in any one spin therefore becomes a lot easier than it otherwise would ever be.
This Erik The Red game is actually an interesting game to play but greatly marred by its very low payouts. Just imagine this...it took me well over 700 spins just to get my first free spins feature game, and that game paid only a 23x win! What the heck! My first 52x win came only after many more feature games later, but my second 60x win came a lot closer. Nonetheless, this Erik The Red game should and could have been a great game to play, if not blundered by Relax Gaming guys!
