Online Casinos Washington

Unlike many other US states, Washington left no stones unturned when it comes to gambling online, outlawing all forms of wagering via the internet since 2006. Even though residents have some gambling options at their disposal, online gambling is not one of them.

Washington is one of few states with specific laws about online gambling as it prohibits all types of gambling activities on the internet. Washington gambling laws, however, allow other forms of gambling, which we will discuss later in this guide.

Is Online Gambling Legal in Washington?

No, there are no legal options to gamble online in Washington. The law applies to both players and operators as the Washington Revised Code prohibits the transmission of gambling information over the web.

What's also important to note is that Washington has written laws about gambling online. In 2006, the state criminalised online gambling, which was later reinforced in 2011 and stated it is illegal to play "any unregulated gambling" games.

The legal gambling age to play at a tribal casino in the state is 21. However, some casinos in Washington allow persons aged 18 and up to gamble freely, depending on the type of game.

Are Land-Based Casinos Allowed in Washington?

The law on brick-and-mortar casinos is very different, and gamblers have been given more leeway when it comes to in-person gambling. The state law stipulates that casino operations can be run only on Native American reservations.

There are currently some 30 tribal casinos operating in the state, most of which are concentrated in the northwestern part of Washington around Seattle, Tacoma and Everett, offering a variety of popular games like slots and progressive jackpots poker, bingo and baccarat.

Which Forms of Online Gambling Are Legal in Washington?

Unfortunately, the laws are strict regarding online gambling, and none of the online casino-style games is considered legal. Unlike many US states that allow betting on daily fantasy sports, these are illegal in Washington. Poker players and sports bettors are also in the same boat, as these two activities remain illegal.

You may find offshore gambling sites that accept Washington residents, but you should be very careful to take this route. We would advise you to stay within the law and visit a land-based casino instead to stay out of trouble.

Can I Get in Trouble for Gambling in a Washington Online Casino?

Since 2006, Washington has criminalised online gambling, making it against the law to gamble or run gambling operations online. Doing so implies hefty fines and even prison sentences.

Whilst law enforcement is more interested in residents who operate these casinos, you can still get into trouble for gambling, so it's better to stay on the right side of the law.

What Is the Future of WA Online Gambling?

It seems that Washington is adamant about keeping all forms of online gambling illegal, so it's probably safe to say that things will not change in the state any time soon.

There is no denying that gambling on the internet can generate revenue for the state. However, state lawmakers don't seem at all keen to push for such legislation, which means that Washington isn't likely to embark on that route any time soon.
