Munchers is a 25 payline, 5 reel slot game coming from NextGen Gaming. This slot is a mixture between creepy and fun. The theme is set in some botanical garden where the main character is a carnivore and eats whatever lands on him and it seems that flies are his favorite meal.

If you take a look at the paytable you won’t be too impressed. The fly is the highest paying symbol with a payout of 1500 coins for a win of 5 of them on a winning payline. The Muncher is the wild symbol in this game and doesn’t offer any multiplier in the base play or in the bonus round. This is a great setback in the game and combined with the poor paytable I don’t think you can have some big wins here. The scatter symbol is the water can and 5 of them on the reels bring a win of 100 x total bet. An advantage is that 2 of them at least double your bet.

From the bonus round this game offers only a free spins bonus. If you manage to hit 3 scatters on the reels you are awarded with 10 free spins. The strangest thing is that the free spins don’t have any multiplier attached or can be retriggered. At least one of these options would be great for some bigger wins. During the free spins under every reel there is a Muncher plant which can expand to eat up the entire reel and turn it wild. In theory if you get 2, 3 or more plants to come up for dinner you can have some really great wins.

Still if you play this game you will see that in the free spins bonus the biggest number of plants to come up is two, let alone 3 or more. I have played this game lots of times and never got 3 reels of wilds. In the bonus round I usually have wins of 20-30 x bet which is too little so I just stopped playing this game anymore.

Important symbols to look forward to are logically the wilds (Muncher) and the scatters (Watering Can). Unfortunately there isn’t too much going on during base game. I only had small hits despite the fact that the wilds dropped in often.

My biggest win during base game was around 50x bet. So obviously the free spins is where the real money is at. You need at least 3 scatters to win 10 free spins. I wasn’t too amused finding out it was just 10 spins and not even a multiplier attached to it.

The only nice thing about the free spins feature is that the munchers placed under each reel become active all of a sudden. During random spins they can come out to turn an entire reel wild. Needless to say this improves your chances of hitting something significantly.

Although they came out often, my problem was that they usually turned reel 5 wild or reel 2 and 5 when they failed to connect for a good winning combination. I’m not sure how many reels they can turn wild at the same time, but I never got more than two.

Overall the feature disappointed me, since I was really expecting a bit more from it. I ended up winning only 10x bet and decided to call it a day. Never played this game again since.
