UEFA Nations League Recap: Quarter-Finals and Playoffs

This season’s UEFA Nations League featured quarter-final matches played on 

20th and 23 March, at the same time as the playoff matches for the next season. We now know who will play in the semi-finals in June and what teams will play in the Leagues A, B and C in the next campaign.

Extra Time and Penalties: All the Thrills of the Quarter-Finals

The quarter-final matches of the UEFA Nations League 2024/25 campaign brought plenty of excitement around Europe. Fans could enjoy the top international football action, with some matches going into extra time and some even eventually to a penalty shootout.

What the fans really enjoyed was the abundance of goals in rematches across all stadiums, from two goals in France to six in Spain and Germany and seven in Portugal. 

These are the complete quarter-final scores:

  • Spain 3-3 Netherlands, aet (agg: 5-5, pens 5-4) 
  • France 2-0 Croatia, aet (agg: 2-2, pens 5-4) 
  • Portugal 5-2 Denmark, aet (agg: 5-3) 
  • Germany 3-3 Italy (agg: 5-4)

Semi-finals will be played in Germany in June: 

  • 1st semi-final: Germany vs Portugal (Munich Football Arena) - 4 June
  • 2nd semi-final: Spain vs France (Stuttgart Arena) - 5 June

The third-place match and the final will both be played on 8 June.

What the Playoffs Brought

This international window was also used for playoff matches that decided which teams would stay in leagues A and B in the next season and who got relegated to leagues B and C. The League C/D playoffs will be played in March 2026.

Türkiye was dominant in its duel with Hungary to win a place in League A for the next campaign, and Greece defeated Scotland for its spot in the highest level of the Group stage. Belgium and Serbia managed to keep their places in League A after defeating Ukraine and Austria. 

League A/B playoffs:

  • Hungary 0-3 Türkiye (agg: 1-6)
  • Belgium 3-0 Ukraine (agg: 4-3)
  • Serbia 2-0 Austria (agg: 3-1)
  • Scotland 0-3 Greece (agg: 1-3)

Republic of Ireland, Georgia and Slovenia kept their spots in League B for the next edition of the Nations League. Iceland got relegated to League C after suffering a defeat in both legs of the playoffs.

League B/C playoffs:

  • Iceland 1-3 Kosovo (agg: 2-5)
  • Republic of Ireland 2-1 Bulgaria (agg: 4-2)
  • Georgia 6-1 Armenia (agg: 9-1)
  • Slovenia 1-0 Slovakia, aet (agg: 1-0)

UEFA Nations League Winner Odds

Now that we know the semi-final opponents, bookmakers have already produced the odds for both matches and the outright winners of the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League, 

If we look at the odds for the first semi-final, Germany is considered a favourite in its match against Portugal, with the odds currently between 1.85 and 1.98 in the Winner market. Portugal sits between 3.6 and 4.0, according to the bookies.

Spain and France are much closer without a clear favourite in their clash. 

A slight advantage is given to Spain, with the odds between 2.4 and 2.5 at the moment.

Bookmakers have set the odds that France will win this fixture between 2.63 and 3.00.

Looking at the UEFA Nations League outright Winner market, Germany and Spain are again favourites, with very similar odds on offer for both teams. France is close behind, while Portugal is given smaller chances with odds between 4.5 and 6.0.
