The second golf Major of the year is upon us. From 14 to 17 May, Aronimink Golf Club, located just outside Philadelphia, will host the USPGA.
We will walk you through our bet of the week, the pre-event favourites, and a few betting offers that you can collect at betting sites.
Who Are the Favourites?
World numbers 1, 2, and 3 head the betting, which on the one hand makes sense, but on the other hand is quite an unusual occurrence in that it’s quite so symmetric.
That means that Scottie Scheffler is around 5.5. It’s not surprising because he’s been by far the best and most prolific winner and best golfer on the planet for the last three years or so, though he hasn’t been quite at his best so far this season.
Next up is recent US Masters winner Rory McIlroy at 9.0. He was brilliant at Augusta just over a month ago. He has only played once since last week at the Truist Championship, finishing 19th, though he did play well on the final day with a 67.
Next up is Cameron Young, the World Number 3, at odds of 13.0, who has probably been the best player this season on the PGA Tour. He’s made 10 out of 10 cuts, won twice already, finished third in the Masters, and then an impressive 10th last week.
So you can see why there will be plenty of money coming in for him.
Betting Tip: Back Justin Rose to finish Top 10
In the last three events played at this course, Englishman Justin Rose won in 2010 and came second in 2018, so he has an outstanding record here.
He showed that despite being 45 years old, he’s not going away any time soon, when winning the Farmers Insurance back in January and tying third in the Masters a month ago.
It’s true that other results this season have been a bit inconsistent, but he’s a golfer who, these days, focuses mostly on the Majors and knows that building a legacy in the game is mostly about how many wins you have in those.
Either way, this is a man who’s seen it all before in golf and won’t be fazed by the occasion. Winning it may be too much of an ask, but 5.5 on a Top 10 finish looks a pretty good bet.
The lively outsiders
LIV rebel Jon Rahm is next at 14.0, followed by the incredibly consistent Xander Schauffele at 18.0.
Other lively outsiders include the evergreen Justin Rose at 45.0, who has a good record at this course, and his Ryder Cup team-mate Robert McIntyre, of Scotland.
The Scot is priced at 55.0 and - though no one doubts his talent - he’s allowed his emotions to get the better of him out there on the course recently, so he’ll need to work on that.
There’s no Phil Mickelson as his career winds down, while Tiger Woods has taken time out from golf after that car crash last month.
Americans Have a Strong History Here
All of the last 10 winners in this tournament have been American. They include that man Mickelson, who won against all odds in 2021, Scheffler last year, and Schauffele the year before that in 2024.
Brooks Koepka, who recently rejoined the PGA after leaving LIV, won it back-to-back in 2018 and 2019. He’s 40.0. Justin Thomas is also a two-time winner in it: 2017 and 2022. You can back Thomas at 36.0.
Remarkably, in the 107 times the USPGA Championship was staged, the winner was an American in 89 of them. Next-best country is Australia, producing five winners.
Another interesting trend is that 20 of the last 26 winners had already won an event earlier on in the season, so if you’re looking for the potential winner here, look at who’s already picked up a ‘W ‘this year.
