UEFA Nations League Recap: What to Expect in Spring

The group stage of the latest edition of the UEFA Nations League has concluded. We now know who’s been relegated, who’s been promoted, whom we will watch in the quarter-finals, and who will be playing in the playoffs for their chance to remain in their current group (league).

Check out the results of the final two matches from each league and see what awaits each team in the spring of 2025.

League A: Results and Key Takeaways

League A is the top level of the UEFA Nations League.

It is divided into four groups, out of which the top eight clubs qualify for the quarter-finals, and third-ranked teams go into the playoffs with the runner-ups of the groups from League B.

Teams that finish in the 4th place in their respective groups get relegated to League B.

These are the results of the final two rounds of the four League A groups:

Group A1:

  • 15/11 Portugal 5-1 Poland
  • 15/11 Scotland 1-0 Croatia
  • 18/11 Croatia 1-1 Portugal
  • 18/11 Poland 1-2 Scotland

Portugal and Croatia qualified for the quarter-finals, Scotland is now in the playoffs, while Poland is relegated to League B.

Group A2:

  • 14/11 Belgium 0-1 Italy
  • 14/11 France 0-0 Israel
  • 17/11 Israel 1-0 Belgium
  • 17/11 Italy 1-3 France

France and Italy qualified comfortably for the quarter-finals, while Belgium will play in the playoffs to stay in League A, and Israel is relegated to League B.

Group A3:

  • 16/11 Germany 7-0 Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • 16/11 Netherlands 4-0 Hungary
  • 19/11 Bosnia and Herzegovina 1-1 Netherlands
  • 19/11 Hungary 1-1 Germany 

Germany and Netherlands are in the quarter-finals, Hungary heads to the playoffs, and Bosnia and Herzegovina to League B.

Group A4:

  • 15/11 Denmark 1-2 Spain
  • 15/11 Switzerland 1-1 Serbia
  • 18/11 Serbia 0-0 Denmark
  • 18/11 Spain 3-2 Switzerland

European champions Spain and Denmark head to the quarter-finals, Serbia will play in the playoffs, while, after a solid performance in the Euroes, Switzerland fails to make a good result in the Nations League A and gets relegated to League B with only two points.

League B: Who Moves to League A?

The top team from each of the four groups goes directly to League A for the next campaign. 

Second-placed teams head to the League A/B playoffs, third-placed to the League B/C playoffs, while fourth-placed get relegated to League C.

These are the results and outcomes of the matches in League B this November:

Group B1:

  • 16/11 Georgia 1-1 Ukraine
  • 16/11 Albania 0-0 Czechia
  • 19/11 Albania 1-2 Ukraine
  • 19/11 Czechia 2-1 Georgia

Czechia gets promoted to League A, Ukraine will be playing in the League A/B playoffs, Georgia in the League B/C playoffs, while Albania gets relegated to League C.

Group B2:

  • 15/11 Greece 0-3 England
  • 15/11 Republic of Ireland 1-0 Finland
  • 17/11 England 5-0 Republic of Ireland
  • 17/11 Finland 0-2 Greece

England will play in League A in the next campaign, while Greece (with the same number of points) will try to secure its place through the League A/B playoffs. Republic of Ireland will play in the League B/C playoffs, while Finland is relegated to League C.

Group B3:

  • 15/11 Kazakhstan 0-2 Austria
  • 15/11 Slovenia 1-4 Norway
  • 17/11 Austria 1-1 Slovenia
  • 17/11 Norway 5-0 Kazakhstan

Norway gets promoted to League A, and Austria will try to do that through the Playoffs. Slovenia will play in the League B/C playoffs and Kazakhstan is relegated to League C.

Group B4:

  • 16/11 Montenegro 0-2 Iceland
  • 16/11 Türkiye 0-0 Wales
  • 19/11 Montenegro 3-1 Türkiye
  • 19/11 Wales 4-1 Iceland

Wales will get to play in League A, Türkiye will look to secure its spot there in the playoffs, Iceland will play in the League B/C playoffs, and Montenegro is relegated to League C.

Leagues C and D: The Outcome

In League C, North Macedonia, Northern Ireland, Romania and Sweden won their respective groups to win promotion to League B for the next campaign. Armenia, Bulgaria, Kosovo, and Slovakia will all get their chances to secure a spot there through playoffs, while Belarus, Cyprus, Estonia, and Faroe Islands remain in League C.

Latvia and Luxembourg will play for their chance to stay in League C, while Azerbaijan and Lithuania are relegated to League D.

In League D,  Moldova and San Marino get promoted to League C, Gibraltar and Malta will get to play the playoffs for their spot in League C, and Andorra and Liechtenstein will remain in League D for the next campaign.

What Will We See Next in the UEFA Nations League?

Following the draw from 22 November 2024, here’s all the action we can expect next in the UEFA Nations League, starting from Thursday, 20 and Sunday, 23 March 2025:

League C/D playoff matches:

  • Gibraltar vs Latvia
  • Malta vs Luxembourg

League B/C playoff games:

  • Kosovo vs Iceland
  • Bulgaria vs Republic of Ireland
  • Armenia vs Georgia
  • Slovakia vs Slovenia

League A/B playoffs:

  • Türkiye vs Hungary
  • Ukraine vs Belgium
  • Austria vs Serbia
  • Greece vs Scotland

Quarter-finals:

  • Netherlands vs Spain
  • Croatia vs France
  • Denmark vs Portugal
  • Italy vs Germany

The semi-finals, the third-place match, and the final will all take place in June 2025.
