UEFA Club Competitions Recap: 21-23 January

It’s been a while since we last saw some action in the UEFA club competitions, and the beginning of 2025 looks promising when it comes to excitement and the number of goals scored in one round.

Who was victorious this time around, and who kept on sinking even deeper? Read on to find out.

Champions League Recap: A Knockout Phase Without Man City?

As we eagerly await the final round of this campaign’s group stage to see who will qualify for the knockout stage and who will play in the playoffs, Liverpool and Barcelona fans can enjoy their clubs’ Matchday 8 games.

Liverpool won its match against Lille 2:1, and Barcelona beat Benfica 5:4 to confirm their places in the knockout stage.

Arsenal, Inter, Atlético Madrid, AC Milan, and Atalanta all won their respective matches to secure a spot in either the knockout or the playoffs.

Aston Villa, Bayern, Leverkusen, Celtic, Dortmund, Feyenoord, Inter, Juventus, Lille, Monaco, Real Madrid, and Brest are also at least in the playoffs draw, and everything will be much clearer after the final round of the group stage.

Manchester City might not qualify for the playoffs after losing 4:2 to PSG on Wednesday. The English side now only has eight points, sitting at the 25th position, currently outside the playoff zone.

UEFA Europa League Recap: Lazio Through to the Round of 16

Lazio is the only team to have secured its place in the knockout phase of the Europa League in the current campaign. The Italian team won its match against Real Sociedad 3:1, to cement its place in the round of 16, dropping only two points so far in the group stage.

Eintracht Frankfurt and Manchester United have won their respective matches and qualified for the round of 16 or the playoffs, depending on the results in the final leg of the group stage. Athletic Club is also there, despite losing to Beşiktaş 4:1.

Anderlecht, Olympiacos, AZ Alkmaar, Bodø/Glimt, Viktoria Plzeň, FCSB, Galatasaray, Lyon, Union SG, Rangers, and Tottenham have also secured their places in the playoffs draw or the knockout phase.
