Tottenham spent an absolute fortune in the summer, which included the signings of Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Savinho, while the highly-rated Argentine defender Marcos Senesi arrived on a free transfer.
But things couldn’t have started off any worse for them with a 3-0 defeat at Brentford last weekend that could have been even worse had Igor Thiago not missed a penalty for the Bees late on.
Newcastle had a problematic summer that included losing manager Eddie Howe and having to sell some of their most important assets, such as Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal, and Tonali to…Spurs (again, see below!). But they managed a decent 2-2 draw against Liverpool, where they were a bit unlucky with Liverpool’s equaliser coming in the eighth minute of second-half injury time.
So, these are two teams struggling in defence in a match that has a rich history of ‘both teams to score’ (BTTS) in it, with 10 of the last 12 seeing goals at both ends.

Fun Fact: Newcastle scored at least two goals in 10 of the last 12 times they played Tottenham, losing just twice in the process, which were the only two times they didn’t score two goals or more across that period, losing 6-1 away in 2023 and 5-1 in 2022. Across that remarkable run, scores also included 6-1 and 4-0 wins for Newcastle and two 2-2 draws.
