Paraguay
Paraguay are now running an 8-game unbeaten streak, and they have managed to climb up to fifth place in the group. They are now six points clear of 7th-place Venezuela and the spot that leads to the 2026 World Cup playoffs.
They are facing a challenging duo of games, one that will, in large part, decide whether they will directly qualify for the World Cup. First, they will have to overcome Uruguay before travelling to Brazil to face their rejuvenated national team under the leadership of Carlo Ancelotti.
They are expected to rely on their defensive discipline, as they are the third-best defence in the group. They have only conceded nine times, although six of these came in their last five games. They struggle attacking, scoring only 11 times so far.
Their total tally of five wins, six draws, and just three defeats makes their odds of getting a spot that leads to the World Cup quite favourable.
Uruguay
Just one win in their last eight games has brought them down to third place, tied with Paraguay in points. Therefore, the team has the same chance of making it through as their present opponents, should they improve their play.
Not an easy task, considering manager Bielsa will not have several of his best players. Valverde, Betancur, and Nunez are perhaps the most noteworthy absences, and Uruguay are a different team without them.
It’s not entirely unlikely they face stressful times ahead in their last two remaining games. At this point, however, they still have a chance to avoid that, and they are masters of their own fortunes.
Their statistical profile is not terrible, with five wins, six draws, and three losses in the group stage, tallying 17 goals scored and 10 goals conceded so far.
