Getafe
Getafe suffered a very disappointing defeat at the hands of Valencia this weekend (3-0), in a game that was essentially decided very early on. Getafe conceded in the 7th minute, on Valencia’s first proper attacking effort, through a penalty kick.
Another goal that was scored in the 18th, and the third (again through a penalty) in the 37th minute, put the game out of reach. It was the fifth straight defeat for manager Bordalas’s side, making his presence on the team next season a rather unlikely scenario (supported by recent media speculation).
The match against Valencia was the fourth straight game without a goal for Getafe, and they are officially the worst attack in the league (31 goals scored), even below relegated Valladolid.
Just 14 of Getafe’s games have ended with BTTS, and only 11 have had over 2.5 goals (by far the fewest in La Liga). They are currently 13th with 39 points, and they have nothing meaningful to play for because they are not really threatened with relegation, and are nowhere near European football. Next week, they will travel to Mallorca to face the local team.
Athletic Bilbao
Bilbao is very close to clinching a top-5 finish following the 1-0 victory over Alaves. That was a clash that appeared to be heading towards a goalless finish, but Bilbao managed to grab a winner through an own goal in the 71st minute.
Sancet, in his comeback after a two-week absence, crossed the ball, and Alaves defender Sanchez sent it into his team’s net. That game was a much-appreciated return to the winning ways for Bilbao, following the draw in the Basque derby against Sociedad and the two crushing defeats at the hands of Manchester United for the Europa League.
The latter were particularly uncharacteristic of Ernesto Valverde’s side, the best defence of La Liga (just 26 goals conceded). They are seeking to clinch a spot in next season’s Champions League, and Thursday’s game might be the moment for it. Only 19 of their 35 games have seen BTTS, and just 13 ended with over 2.5 goals.
Ernesto Valverde was satisfied with the result against Alaves, but not the performance. He thanked the fans once again for supporting the team in full force, despite the recent European disappointments against Manchester United.
Star brothers Inaki and Nico Williams remain doubtful for the match against Getafe. Bilbao will travel to Valencia next week to face the local team.
