Genoa
Even though their season is essentially over, Genoa managed to temporarily jeopardise Napoli’s march towards the scudetto. Ironically enough, the two clubs have very friendly relations, and their fans have strong ties with each other. Genoa fell behind twice in the game (15’, 64’) but were able to come back and equalise both times, first with Meret’s own goal and then with Vasquez’s header (32’, 84’).
This was their fifth game without a win, but considering the opponent, it certainly was a successful outcome. It’s obvious that since Patrick Vieira’s side secured another season in the top flight, their motivation went downhill. They have nothing specific to play for.
Next week, they will face Bologna away from home in their last game of the season. The board appears poised to invest in improving the squad during the summer, and there is optimism that Genoa might be able to contend for one of the spots leading to European football.
Atalanta
Atalanta were able to punch their ticket to next season’s Champions League thanks to an impressive home win against Roma. Lookman gave them an early lead in the 9th minute before Roma equalised after the half-hour mark. 21-year-old Ghanaian Sulemana struck late as a super sub, giving his team the lead and the win in the 68th minute.
The Bergamaschi must be lamenting their rather disappointing home record prior to this game, considering they’ve been on a tear away from home, sporting the best record in the league with 12 wins in 18 away games this season. Had they taken care of business in Bergamo, they might have been contending for the league now.
The question now remains whether manager Gasperini will stay in charge. He is contractually tied to Atalanta, but has indicated his refusal to renew the commitment.
