If the extra burden of European duties does not weigh too heavily, there is every chance this game once again becomes a goal-fest. Both sides’ forward lines have thrived so far in the Bundesliga.

  • Recommendation: Over 3,5
  • Odds: 1.73 (at the time of writing)
  • Stake: 4

Eintracht Frankfurt

They will want to erase the memory of the final 20 minutes at Borussia Park. What had been a party against Mönchengladbach, with the score at 6-0 in their favour, turned into a 6-4 finish because the rotation moves made by coach Dino Toppmöller completely destabilised the side.

His logic was sound. He wanted to rest some of his key players. The result was disastrous, and it tarnished what had otherwise been an outstanding performance. Just when they looked set for their first clean sheet of the season, they ended up conceding four times.

The overall picture remains unchanged: sparkling up front, shaky at the back. They boast the second-best attack in the Bundesliga (17 goals in five matches), but also the second-worst defence (13 conceded). All seven of their competitive matches this season have gone over 3.5 goals.

With the exception of the 1-3 defeat to Leverkusen, they have scored at least three goals in every outing. Now Bayern arrive. The last three times Frankfurt hosted them in the league, all matches went over 5.5 goals.

This will be a huge test for their defence and overall character, a real indicator of whether they can truly “trouble” the Bundesliga elite this season.

Bayern Munich

For the second match in a row, Vincent Kompany opted for heavy rotation in his starting XI. After the 4-0 home win over Werder Bremen, the Belgian coach explained that only this way can his side cope with the relentless schedule. Last season, he was almost an enemy of rotation; this year, he applies it more openly, partly because his squad depth is thinner.

That’s something worth keeping in mind: Bayern will likely continue to rest several starters in the more straightforward league fixtures. Not that it has caused them any real trouble so far. They remain flawless, with 5/5 wins, sitting at the top of the table.

The rotation has been more evident in their away matches, where defensively they have looked a bit inconsistent.

They conceded twice at Augsburg and once at Hoffenheim, and it could have been more in both cases. Of course, their attack compensates. In their last six Bundesliga away games, they have scored at least three goals in each,  but they are not “perfect”.

For the trip to Frankfurt, however, we shouldn’t expect many changes. Their midweek Champions League fixture was already played on Tuesday in Cyprus, giving them ample time to recover before this clash.
