Bayern Munich - RB Leipzig Preview and Predictions

The opening match of the Bundesliga is played at the Allianz Arena, where Bayern Munich is hosting Leipzig.

Facts

  • Leipzig has held their own recently against Bayern (2-3-2), finding the net in each of their last ten clashes.
  •  Nine of their last ten meetings produced over 2.5 goals, and nine of ten saw both teams score.
  • Bayern is prolific at home, scoring in 20 straight home league games and scoring at least twice in their last 15.

Betting Tip: Bayern - Leipzig

Both sides thrive in attack, and all signs point to goals at both ends. The only concern is Werner’s approach, as he set up his team very defensively on his last trip to Munich with Werder Bremen. Still, with a bit of caution, we recommend BTTS as a pick.

Bayern Munich

Bayern is in good form with a strong starting eleven. They showed their quality in the 2-1 Franz Beckenbauer SuperCup win over Stuttgart, but questions remain at the back after no defensive reinforcements arrived this summer. They remain overwhelming Bundesliga favourites, though their performance is likely to be similar to last season.

Challenging for the Champions League, however, is a different story. Depth issues could derail their ambitions in Europe. The departures of Müller, Sané and Coman, plus Musiala’s long-term absence, have left them short in attacking midfield.

Currently, for example, Gnabry and Olise are being used centrally behind Kane, but cover is thin if injuries hit, with only teenager Karl (17)  and veteran Guerreiro (32) available as alternatives.

Injuries to Ito, Davies, Pavlovic and Wanner further stretch the squad, leaving Kompany with just 14–15 reliable options to start the campaign. Transfer pursuits for Woltemade (Stuttgart) and Nkunku (Chelsea) fell through, and there is no indication that new additions are expected.

Leipzig

RB Leipzig will enter the new season refreshed, and they will be looking to bounce back after missing out on Europe for the first time in their history. Ole Werner, formerly of Werder Bremen, has been appointed head coach in a somewhat surprising move.

The club invested in several young players, with a clear mandate: return to the high-pressing, transition-heavy football Red Bull clubs are known for.

Such a transition will not be easy, and the early signs were mixed. They edged Sandhausen in the Cup (4-2), falling behind twice before finishing the job late on (3-2 at 79’, 4-2 at 90+6’). After the game, Werner criticised the lack of defensive concentration and intensity, especially in the first half.

Leipzig’s pace and attacking talent remain its biggest weapons, but defensive weaknesses persist. They are more effective on the counter than when asked to break down compact defences, which could actually suit them against Bayern.
