Ante is used in some poker variants such as Seven Card Stud or Draw Poker, whereas Texas Hold’em uses blinds – small and big blind – instead (Blinds aren’t forced and are only obligatory for two players, while all players must pay antes).

Ante is an essential part of a poker game. Each player is obliged to pay the amount before the cards are dealt. What this does is increase the pot from the start and incentivise players to participate, rather than fold the moment they receive their cards.
Although ante is commonly lower than the minimum bet, it stimulates the action by creating an initial pot. For the sake of the conversation, let’s say that every player must pay $1 to start. If there are 6 players at the table, that’s $6 already.
