The percentage match was also smaller, but the maximum bonus can be higher. This means you receive a smaller match relative to your deposit, but a potentially larger amount overall.
These match deposit bonuses typically spread their Free Spins over multiple slots and release them in daily batches, and there are also cashout limits.
