Real Sociedad
The international break came at a rather good time for Real Sociedad, who are in need of a restart. They approached the game away at Real Oviedo rather naively and faced a 1-0 defeat.
Despite starting off strong and creating most of the better chances in the game, they lacked the clinical finishing and calm decision-making to take advantage. Dendocker scored 5 minutes before the half for Oviedo, and the team never recovered.
They could have conceded a second in the 58th minute, but the post stood in the way, and, while the team tried to rally for an equaliser in the remainder of the game, they failed to actually create meaningful opportunities to do so. They are now three games without a win in this season’s La Liga (0-2-1), and new manager Francisco’s tenure has not started off well.
Overall, Real Sociedad have won just one of their last 10 games (1-4-5 record). They tried to improve the squad at the deadline, adding midfielders Carlos Soler and Yangel Herrera, but were not able to offload defender Odriozola and forward Sadiq, who have been deemed surplus to requirements. Newcomer Herrera will be injured for this one, as will forward Oskarsson.
Real Madrid
Real Madrid continued their perfect start in the young season, winning at home against Mallorca (2-1). Despite falling behind early thanks to a goal following a set piece (18’), they showed the requisite resilience to respond rather quickly.
Arda Guler delivered the equaliser in the 37th minute following a drawn-out play inside Mallorca’s box that involved several headers.
The comeback was complete mere minutes after that, when Vinicius Jr brilliantly dribbled past several Mallorca defenders and scored a beautiful goal past goalkeeper Roman. Real Madrid scored twice more, in the 45th and 55th minutes, but both were disallowed.
Despite that, the Madrid side was able to keep the opposition at bay for the remainder of the game and never got in danger of losing their lead.
As a result, three wins in three games are secured for Xabi Alonso, who is looking to continue the positive start to his Real Madrid managerial tenure. Dating back to last season, this was Real Madrid’s sixth consecutive win.
In the next game, they will be once more without starting midfielder Bellingham, while defender Mendy and midfielder Camavinga are nearing their return. On Tuesday, 16 September, Madrid will host Marseille for the first round of the Champions League.
