Portugal - Spain Match Preview and Prediction

Portugal and Spain are playing in the final of the 2024-2025 Nations League at the Allianz Arena in Munich. In case the score after the end of the 90’ is even, extra time follows, followed by a penalty shootout, if necessary.

What We Know

  • Six of Spain’s last eight matches ended with BTTS.
  • Portugal has conceded at least once in each of their last five games.
  • The four most recent duels between the two have ended with under 2.5 goals, and five of the last six have been draws.

Portugal - Spain Betting Tip

Both teams have truly earned a place in the final. They are both excellent sides, though at this point, Spain appears to be a tad better. We expect goals to be scored by either side here, and our pick is Spain to win or draw and Both Teams to Score (BTTS).

  • Betting tip: Spain to win or draw & BTTS
  • Odds: 1.98 (at the time of writing)
  • Stake: 5

Portugal

Portugal aims to repeat their 2019 run, which led to their win in the inaugural Nations League tournament. They are back in the final six years later, following their comeback victory over Germany in the semi-final.

Opportunities were few and far between in the first half of the game, and the intermission saw the teams tied at 0-0. Germany took the lead early in the second, but Roberto Martinez pushed the right buttons and was able to reorganise his team for the better.

One of the substitutes, Chico Conceição, scored the equaliser in the 63rd minute before Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock for his team and gave them the lead (and the win) 5 minutes later.

The Portuguese are clearly a very talented side, with a youthful, promising core of players. There were no more than three players over 30 in the lineup for the game against Germany.

Portugal will likely build the team for the foreseeable future around this group of players as they seek to balance experience and youthfulness ahead of the 2026 World Cup, in the hope of achieving better results at this major tournament than in previous ones.

Spain

Spain were absolutely dominant for 70’ in the semi-final versus France, before eventually finishing the game with a 5-4 win, in one of the most spectacular international football matches in recent years.

From the 20th minute onwards, they hammered France. Nico Williams kicked things off in the 23rd minute before Merino added a second just two minutes later.

Luis de la Fuente’s side added two more goals early in the second half through Yamal and Pedri (54’-55’), before France pulled one back with Mbappe’s penalty near the hour mark.

Yamal extended the league to four goals once again (67’), but, from that point onwards, Spain admittedly relaxed and allowed France to score thrice and finish the game with a more respectable score.

Spain is undoubtedly the most in-form national team in Europe at the moment. They are the reigning European champions and have not suffered a defeat in competitive games since 28 March 2023.

They possess probably the most talented pool of young players in the world, with Pedri, Yamal, Nico Williams, Huijsen, and more. These players are not even near their peak yet, either. Only Argentina can boast a similar level of young talent at an international level.
