Fiorentina

Fiorentina fell 2-1 away to Betis, but that is a result that leaves everything open ahead of the second leg. The Viola fell behind early (6’), and they remained rather passive after that for the remainder of the half.

The second half was a different story. Fiorentina took the initiative, but in doing so, they exposed their own goal, which led to Betis scoring their second through Antony (64’). Ten minutes later, however, Fiorentina was able to grab a very valuable goal through Ranieri.

Manager Palladino wants his team to take care of business in yet another home game. He emphasised the mental strength it took for his team to stick with it and fight for the crucial goal.

Fiorentina has traditionally struggled against Spanish teams in the semi-finals (one draw, four losses), while they have just two wins in 15 games in all stages against Spanish teams. Their home games this season have often been a goal fest, with four of them seeing over 2,5 goals.

Fiorentina suffered another loss on Sunday, this time in Serie A against Roma (1-0) and dropped to 9th place in the domestic league. They’re currently standing below the spots leading to European football, but also just four points away from 4th place and the Champions League.

Real Betis

Re-born man Antony once again led the way for Betis, guiding them to a 2-1 win. The Andalusia side took the lead early on with Abde Ezzalzouli (6’), thanks to an assist from Cedric Bakambu, who failed to score for the first time in six Conference League games.

Betis continued to be the better team, even when conceding the ball to Fiorentina in the second half. They managed to score in the counter with Antony, who doubled his team’s lead with a beautiful strike.

Fiorentina did, however, pull one back with Ranieri in the 73rd minute. Manager Pellegrini lamented the lost chance to score even more goals, while he emphasised that his team is going to Florence aiming to win the game.

Betis has a 3-1-2 record away from home, having scored in all but one of those games. Three of them saw over 2,5 goals. Interestingly enough, the Andalusians have scored first in 12 of their 13 Conference League games.

They’re still in the mix for a Champions League spot through the league, coming away with a win over Espanyol away from home, which brought them 6th place in the standings with 57 points.
