PSG
PSG faced Atletico Madrid in the 1st round of the Club World Cup on Saturday, earning a comfortable and impressive win. Despite Atletico’s undeniable quality, the Parisians took complete control of the game and scored four goals to Atletico’s zero. The PSG players had a field day - Fabian Ruiz gave his team the lead in the 19th minute, and Vitinha scored a second goal right at the end of the half.
PSG were a bit lucky in the 58th minute when Atletico scored but the goal was disallowed by the VAR for a foul committed during the play. Everything was decided for good in the 78th minute when Atletico had a player sent off. PSG scored two more goals, first with Mayulu and then with Lee Kang-in.
This was PSG’s 6th straight win in all competitions, and all of them saw over 2.5 goals scored. In this stretch of games, Enrique’s players have scored a whopping 21 goals, indicative of their goal-scoring prowess. The French and European champions will be looking to build on their impressive streak in the second round of the Club World Cup versus Botafogo. It will be their first time ever facing a Brazilian team, and a win here will bring them to the knockout stage of the competition.
Botafogo
Botafogo started off their Club World Cup obligations with a win, overcoming the resistance of the Seattle Sounders on Monday (2-1). The Brazilians were dominant at the start, taking their chances and earning a 2-0 lead at the half. Jair scored the first in the 28th minute, while Igor Jesus added another in the 44th minute.
Renato Paiva’s team was more passive in the second half and gave the Sounders opportunities to amp up the pressure. The Americans scored once to halve Botafogo’s lead, but the Brazilians managed to withstand a late push by the Sounders, and they came away with the three points.
Paiva was quite concerned with his team’s performance in the second half, and he emphasised after the game that his players stand to improve quite a bit in retaining possession of the ball. In any case, this was Botafogo’s 4th straight win in all competitions, and from May onwards, they have an 8-1-2 record.
They will obviously enter the game with PSG as the outsider, but even securing a draw would be counted as a huge positive for the Brazilian champions, and will lead to their chances of qualification skyrocketing.
