Cagliari
Cagliari didn’t manage to avoid defeat, even after producing a decent performance in Milan against Inter last weekend. Inter struck first and managed to surprise Cagliari, scoring twice before the 26th minute. Cagliari fought back through Piccoli in the 48th minute, but Inter scored again seven minutes later to seal the victory.
Despite that, the Sardinians managed to maintain a six-point buffer from the relegation zone. With six rounds remaining in the season, they still need some good results to guarantee their survival in the Serie A for the next season.
Looking ahead, their schedule is relatively manageable. They are hosting Fiorentina, Udinese, and Venezia, and will travel to Verona, Como, and Napoli. They have reason to believe that they will stay in the top flight if they manage to win valuable points in the remaining matches.
Fiorentina
The goalless draw against Parma in the previous round came after Thursday’s visit to Slovenia and the 2-1 win over Celje. Fiorentina was lacking energy and freshness, and the top scorer, Moise Kean, failed to capitalise on the few created opportunities. De Gea was on top of his game, saving his goal on numerous occasions.
As a consequence of this draw, the Viola are now feeling Milan’s pressure quite a bit more, while they lost their chance to apply pressure themselves to Bologna, Lazio, and Roma, in the battle for European football.
For the remainder of the season, they have a few challenges ahead. Visits to Roma, Udinese, and home clashes with Empoli and Bologna make for a challenging run of games. Fiorentina is still in the running for a European trophy, playing the semi-finals of the Conference League against Betis.
