Interesting Facts About Computers & Artificial Intelligence (A.I.)

Recommended Posts

I have just read some interesting articles and I would like to share some of it's highlights...amazing but true facts...no bulling around like some casinos and some customer support teams do, hehehe. No such thing as "money on the way..." here, just modern technology on its way into the future.  ^_^

How many of you had seen the live or delayed telecast of Astronaut Neil Armstrong making his 'one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind' historical landing on the moon? That was way back in July 1969, a time when my parent's TV was still in black and white! So I only saw Neil in shades of grey and white, with his white spacesuit gleaming as he bounces on the surface of the moon. Aaah...that was interesting indeed.

The interesting fact about that landing on the moon was even unbelievable. Did you know that for that first landing on the moon, the space capsule carried an onboard computer that was no more complicated than a simple modern-day calculator?!!!  :shok:

But of course, at that time, whoever has even heard of computers! Even Nintendo games have not emerged yet...I think, hahaha.

So, after landing on the moon, mankind's next step is now to land on Mars...yes, the red planet Mars, to make yet another giant leap for mankind...targeted to happen around the year 2030...but this time around, even one billion 'calculators' just cannot do the same kind of work one 'calculator' did for landing on the moon!!!  :shok: 'Calculator' in this sense refers to the state of computer technology.

That simply blows my mind away! Why isn't that possible? Why is landing on Mars so much more different than landing on the moon?

Firstly, Mars is so far away from earth that communications would require 20-light-minutes to reach! That is the equivalent of 20 minutes at the speed of light! Communications travelling within laser beams would take 20 minutes to reach the space capsule...and that would be totally unacceptable...because any response needed to be taken upon reaching Mars' atmosphere needs instant answers to unknown circumstances! That's really mind boggling!

So...what kind of an onboard computer should the space capsule be carrying? The space and computers experts have this to say..."it needs to be the size of a huge building, connected directly to a nuclear power plant for its power supply!" Ooooh my god!  :p

Secondly, whatever info that NASA has about Mars is chicken feed, so to speak. The Rover may have sent back billions and trillions of info bytes about Mars, but all that is really chicken feed. Nothing much is known about being in the space above the planet, critical to know before any safe landing can be attempted, and to make it back to Earth...so everything is really really daunting!

HP has recently announced its latest computer...a real innovation...purely for this Mars project...a Super Intelligent Computer that works on Memory (Memory  Driven) instead of the usual storage+memory current technology. It currently has 160 Terabytes (TB) of memory...that's 40,000x more than the current 4GB RAM of modern day computers! But all that 160 Terabytes is still only a small fraction of what is needed! So HP plans to reach 4096 Yottabytes (YT) of memory before it can even be considered as 'sufficient' for that Mars landing! Another mind boggling fact! 4096 Yottabytes is equivalent to just over 1 billion times more than today's 4GB memory!!!  :shok:

Can HP actually achieve this incredible feat in just 13 years from now? It has to! Because the space program cannot stop. It won't stop.  :p

Well...so now you know the incredible tasks those space people are facing before a manned trip to Mars can be possible.

I know an easier way, but perhaps quite an impossible way, of getting all those critical info that they need, and I'm sure they know it too...but everyone of you will probably laugh at me if I tell you the way! Hahahahahaha.

I too watched a lot of short education videos from youtube channel 'Today I found out' and I learned a lot of things about history of things. Apparently most things are not what you think they are.

WMS made pinball machines in the past, without Nintendo, Playstation would never exist, also, Nintendo was a company that made card games, Amstrong wasn't the first man on the moon, the game Pong was actually a test game that never completed but became a hit. carrot's original color was purple, cruise control was invented by a blind man in the early 1900.

Just a word of advice mate...do not believe everything you see or watch in Youtube!  :p

Some are meant to disorientate the public...for very specific reasons...like saying that the world is FLAT...and having videos to prove it too! You may even tend to believe in their argumentations! Hahaha.

There have been many critics, proving with videos, that Neil Armstrong never went to the moon...much less making that first step on the moon. And you're saying Neil wasn't the first man on the moon, mate? Hmm...  :p

Can they do it by 2030? Absolutely. Just look how technology has advanced in the last 13 years - I have no doubt in the next 13 years this will be possible.

But please tell us your way - I could do with a good laugh actually  :p

Hmmmm...you really wanna know Sharon darling?...even if just for a good laugh? Hahaha.  :D

Okay...I'll give you a very simple clue...believe it or not...Mars is already inhabited by aliens...they live underground!  :D

Hahaha, I'm aware of stupid things on youtube matey but these people are legit, the facts were checked first by youtube before launch. Now you mentioned it, they also have a video why people think the world is flat and till this day there are still a few people think the world is flat. And there's no way you can prove them other wise because those people think it's all conspiracy.

The thing about media is, you only see what they want you to see. That's why I don't watch tv, it's all about viewpoints, the worse the news, the more people will watch. That's why you see more bad news than good news. Most people like drama because this way, they could feel better, knowing that others have worse problem in life but they do this unconsciously.

World peace is a dream that will never come true. War is a part of life, even in the animal kingdom war exist but the different between human's war and animal's war is, animals don't destroy the earth but we do!

Yep...you've got your points correct mate. I'm glad!  ^_^

Human nature is the biggest worry Aliens have about us! We are Jekyll and Hyde in one body! We can be good one minute and turn evil the next! The bad in humans can destroy our mother Earth if nobody is keeping an eye on us...on what we do...and on what we aim to do.

Just like that manned mission to Mars. The astronauts would be damn lucky if they can eventually land on Mars...without getting any intervention from the Martians! Aliens aren't like humans...they are either Hyde or Jekyll...not both in one like us! Hahaha.

We shoot first and ask questions later. If we see a UFO in our skies, the army would shoot them down first, then ask questions later. So how can Aliens ever believe in the human nature?  :p

So how on earth can we ever get any help from the more advanced Aliens when we are like what we are?  :p

The way I see it, their first reaction would be to prevent human colonisation of Mars! Just as we would prevent any Aliens from taking over our Earth!  :p

You want to visit...sure...no problems...you want to stay...over our dead bodies!!!

Yep, people are afraid of the unknown. We see it as a threat and threat must be eliminated, that's the only logical act to do. People are more cautious in the dark, every small movement or sound makes us suspicious. Or maybe I watched too much horror movies :D

I don't believe in aliens  :p But I find it very hard to believe that this crazy universe does not have life anywhere else! I love all things like this, you've started a very interesting non-gambling topic!

No problems with that Sharon darling. No one believes in the same thing anyway. Just goes to show how bizarre our world and our universe can be, with endless mind boggling facts or fiction which have yet to be proven or debunked.  ;)

That easy way I was talking about was "get the answers from the Martians!"...hahaha. Only they would know all the facts about their planet, and with all that info at hand, NASA only has to focus on getting to Mars and getting back to Earth. Saves a lot of data searching, saves a lot of guesswork for the onboard computer, and making that trip more safe and feasible. The biggest problem is...can the Martians ever trust us humans!!!  :D

"Hello, you have just contacted NASA automated system. How may we help you?"

"Ah..well...hi...yeah, a forum friend of mine is having a simple question and namely "Why is landing on Mars so much more different than landing on the moon?""

"For all questions concerning Mars, please dial 555-MUSK"

LOL Brilliant !!!

To think that Musk Character is a South African , lived around the corner from me in Pretoria...

Thats an amazing story Afi.

Did you guys know that the old dreaded Windows95 powers still plenty of computers today.

Only explanation is that the computers are not connected to internet, as they would be hijacked by hackers in a matter of minutes or hours.

Now...that is a new one to me! Hahaha.

You mean there are still lots of computers running on the old grandpa grandma Windows 95???  :shok:

Ooooh boy...I bet they move like snails though...hahaha.

Oh This is my kind of thread.

I'm interested in space exploration and closely follow the development. You are right.. Apollo on board computer had around 4kb of memory. Our generation average smartphone has 1-2GB which is 250k-500k times more.

I can't believe no one mentioned Elon Musk and his SpaceX project. I believe they are much closer than NASA to land people on Mars which is quiet spectacular since they are private company. That being said... Private company has more of a chance to achieve this since the presidential elections happen every 4 years and one candidate in USA can stay in office for two consecutive turns. Now, Space program has to take less than those 8 years or else it is bound to be scraped by the next government due to high risk and bad PR for elect if something was to go wrong. Every NASA attempt was doomed before the talks started because every one of them was based on 10+ years development.

SpaceX announced their plans to put people on Mars in 2024. First two BFR rockets are to be sent in 2022 but will only carry cargo. Then in 2024 another 4 rockets will follow (2 with cargo and 2 with crew).

All in all exciting times !!! We are very privileged to live in the time when mankind is attempting such things.

Companies like Boeing , SpaceX, Virgin Atlantic and more.. Are all looking into commercializing space flights.

I could go on and on but don't want to bore people with technical details.

Hehehe...I'm glad someone else outside Askgamblers is also interested in such topics!  ^_^

I personally have not mentioned Elon Musk for some reasons...basically because he is more concentrating on his Tesla cars and the Hoop Train (or what's its name...I forgot, hahaha)

As for going to Mars...I now have serious reservations that it would not be possible at all! Taking passengers for a space journey to outer space would be the first proof that I want to see for myself, hahaha. Too long winded to tell more than this!  :p

I feel ya! It's not everyday you meet someone who actually wants to talk about it.

To answer some of the questions in OP.

1. We don't have a technology to transport people safely to mars. Moon is significantly closer than Mars(around 380,000 km compared to min 54.6m km and max 401m km). Current rockets rely on solid fuel for the most part and are very expensive. New fuel type is liquid hydrogen which can potentially be made on Mars hence the price drop and smaller cargo needed.

2. Landing on Mars is much more difficult because of atmosphere. You see there is no atmosphere on Moon. Gravitation on Moon is around 16.6 % of the earth gravitation and on Mars its around 1/3 of earth gravitation. Mars has atmosphere but its very thin compared to the one on earth which makes it much harder to land because there is not enough friction pressure that would slow the spacecraft down e.g with parachute.

3. Old style rockets were one-time use only which makes the development and travel very expensive. New rockets designed by SpaceX are reusable (not fully yet). The BFR rocket that is meant to take people to the Mars will be fully reusable.

4. SpaceX has developed autonomous landing so the rocket can land without the contact with earth.

As a side note. SpaceX is the only private company that delivers cargo and soon will also deliver people to ISS (International Space Station).

Don't take my word for any of the info above as i wrote it from memory and could have gotten some numbers wrong but thats the general idea.

I personally find Elon very inspiring man. He started off with PayPal and now he aims for Mars. He's a lead engineer at SpaceX and Lead designer at Tesla. Also his contribution to OpenAI is worth noting.

lol @ pinnit

There was a time when I believed everything that was thrown to us by NASA...then people started telling and showing proofs that man never landed on the moon, which was later confessed to be true by the moon landing movie maker himself...which, I believed, got him killed, believed to be murdered!

GPS is nothing more than a land-based positioning system...it is not using any satellite as said to be!

The only satellites out there in space are for military/spying use only...that's why the GPS does not work in the Southern Hemisphere where oceans abound!

Before man can safely travel into outer space, they have to safely cross the highly radioactive Van Halen Belt! For all purposes...this is an almost impossible mission to do! Hence space exploration may just be a big damn lie to use all of the allocated Space Exploration budget!

I have to agree with you here. Moon landing videos are really poorly made! Should also mention that since there is no atmosphere on Moon, the flag shouldn't be waving the way it did. It's against the physics.

You are also right about radiation. This is probably the biggest problem next to solar flares. We simply can't stop radiation with our current technology but i believe there is number of research being done as we speak to combat this. One solution would be very strong magnetic field that would limit the radiation to acceptable level.

As for GPS.. I don't have any information about it so can't comment. I live in Northern Hemisphere and it just works here. What i do know is that GPS we use is limited to certain accuracy range. Military grade signal is very accurate (<1m).

There are many proofs that GPS cannot be used over the Southern Hemisphere, especially from Airlines. When they cross vast areas of the ocean in the Southern Hemisphere, the radar cannot track the planes! If GPS is indeed satellite based, then any plane or ship can accurately be tracked in the oceans. This is not happening at all! That's why planes and ships take the longer routes, closer to land, so that they can be safely tracked!  ;)

Very interesting and suspicious indeed. I will have to investigate! ;)

I was just like you before this...believing in everything that has been said and written...until I started doing my own research online...leading from one thing to the next and to the next...it's totally unbelievable...the truth, I mean!  ;)
