Spinning Reels Are Just A Simulation!

Recommended Posts

Today, I was having a short session on one of BetSoft games, more of a refresher game for my fading memory, when I suddenly realised that I have found the game that I had always wanted to use to prove that those spinning reels aren't really spinning at all, but are merely a simulation, to replicate those spinning wheels, or reels, of the old mechanical slot machines.

In those days, the reels of slot machines are actual wheels within the machine, with symbols pasted onto them, and each reel are inter-connected to one another via gearing cogs mechanism. And yes, those reels actually do spin when you pull down that one-arm bandit lever. The mechanism became more complicated with 5-reels slot machines, until one fine day, modern digital technology abolished all of those mechanical slot machines for ever!

Needless to say, there are probably many players who still think that modern day digital slot machines still have reels that spin and spin until they come to a stop, as in those mechanical machines. When I said that those reels were not spinning at all, many found it hard to believe, hehehe.  :D

BetSoft's game, Enchanted, shows a simulation of spinning reels, as in all other games too, but what makes the difference is that the simulation is shown at a slow speed, so those symbols on each reel can actually be seen whilst they are 'spinning'. When those reels stop spinning, three symbols on each reel would stop into the rows positions, right? Wrong!  :p

Those 3 symbols appearing on each reel and on each row do not come from those 'spinning reels' as you saw them! Each symbol has been individually picked and positioned by the RNG's and Algorithm's mechanism in conjunction with the 'game display' program. Results of each spin are already calculated and known faster than a blink of your eye, but the game display program takes a little bit longer time to display the results graphically. At times, you can actually see how much has been won for that particular spin in your credits balance, even though the reels are still 'spinning'! Have you ever come across this yet?  ^_^

Here, I have 3 screenshots to show what I mean. In the first 2 screenshots, you can see the symbols on each reel as they go 'spinning'...those reels have not stop spinning when the screenshot was taken. The third screenshot shows the symbols after they have stopped 'spinning'. It took me more than 2 hours waiting, just to get this third screenshot, because it took that long for that particular symbol to appear on reel 5!

For those of you are already familiar with this BetSoft's 'Enchanted' game, then you will know that the 'Golden Key' symbol can only appear on reel 5, and does not appear at all on reels 1, 2, 3 and 4. Meaning, that 'Golden Key' symbol isn't on those 4 reels at all, but you can actually see the key symbol as those 4 reels go spinning! Why is that? How can you see a symbol that shouldn't be on the reel in the first place?

There you go...what you see as 'spinning' wasn't spinning at all. If they were, that Golden Key symbol would have landed on one of the reels sooner or later, which it won't at all. What you saw as 'spinning' was in fact a series of repetitive images being displayed, finely controlled to replicate a spinning effect of the reels! The final symbols that came onto the reels and rows did not come from those 'spinning' reels, but came from the display program, as determined by the calculated results of the game's algorithms.

Nowadays, those spinning reels can go in any direction they want to, or as designed to. 'Turning Totems', by Thunderkick, shows the reels going round and round horizontally, and individually too on each reel and row! Gonzo's falling symbols do not go spinning, but that doesn't mean that they are falling one by one from a reel. Then there are also reels that go 'spinning' in opposite directions from the reel beside it. And what about symbols that fly out of nowhere and land onto the screen randomly, without having any apparent reels or rows, as in Fruit Warp? The possibilities are endless. That game display program can do whatever the game designer wants the reels to do! Hehehe.  :D

Hahaha, good topic mate! Though, as an experience gambler, I already knew this. When you pressed the spin button, the outcome is already 'out' :)

I noticed this a few years ago while playing at an online casino, when I pressed the spin button, I saw my balance went up while the spin wasn't completed yet. What a buzz killer ain't it? :D

Thanks for the informative explanation of modern slots reel spinning, mate! Very comprehensive and detailed indeed! :good:

Thank you Guru mate.  :hi:

Hope members won't get confused about why at times they could see the win first whilst the reels are still 'spinning'...or believing that wins can be gained by pressing the 'Stop' button...or why so many other things...  :D

Afi4wins, i knew this also but thanks.

Can you give me your opinion also about the following , with certain slots where you have to choose  1 out of 3 or even 4 symbols in order to unveal your number of free spins, the outcome is already determined, no matter which symbol you will pick.   Thanks in advance for your reply.

I believe this is true also, the amount of free spins/cash bonus is already determined but the idea of avaliable to choose is just exciting :)

Also, if you look closely, some symbols changed half a second before they stop, maybe even shorter. You could feel being cheated but that's not the case :D

Let's put it this way mate...if you know that whichever symbol you pick would get the same result, would there be any fun in that? :p

Then you'd say "heeey, I want to pick and choose the symbol that I want...maybe I'd get lucky and get the best reward"  :D

Hahaha...and that is why the game allows you to pick any symbol that you want...to give you the satisfaction that you actually made your own choice! The truth of the matter is...no matter which symbol you pick, the outcome has already been predetermined! Those small wins and those occasional big wins cannot be swapped around. If you're lucky, you'd get the better prize, simple as that!  :D

Hehehe...precisely mate!  ^_^

Notice how some players complained that they had pressed the 'stop' button, expecting that 'winning' symbol in view to instantly stop onto the reel, but that symbol suddenly vanishes and another symbol appears on the reel instead! Hahaha. Just goes to show that what you see spinning on that reel isn't there in the first place!

The symbol that finally appeared is the symbol that has already been predetermined to appear on that reel, but that spinning reels makes it all the more exciting and exhilarating, doesn't it?

Yes, I confirmed this by my personal experience Afi mate. Your explanation is well-explained thanks, Afi!

But, there's a question that lingers in my mind what about the progressive jackpots or the random ones? Do they follow the same process I think they're excluded or maybe my internet connection was so slow and that I can't cope from that bulk winnings!  :p

I just dont hope I will ever read clear evidence these software providers can see me, via my camera in my pc, whilst playing...

Am always gambling totally naked.

What about you , Cococop ? :p

Hahahahahaha...well Volendam mate...if anybody is watching you naked via your computer's camera, most likely it'll be guys...so no harm done!  :D  As to whether it is possible for them to do that in the first place...well...there's been quite a lot of talk by experts that it is indeed possible!!!  :p So these guys have actually TAPED their computer's camera to prevent privacy invasions! Hahaha.  :D

Nope...I haven't taped mine...maybe some lady is watching me somewhere...who knows...hahahaha.

You're most welcome mate!  :hi:

Well, as far as I have read and know, those big progressive jackpots, like Mega Moolah, for example, depends 100% on the casino's RNG and overall algorithms! The randomness is really random, so the chances of hitting a jackpot is really really small...not like the controlled randomness for wins in normal non-jackpot games.

If you think about this, it would be like waiting for your 7-digits number, or higher, to appear into the RNG's result of just one number out of the millions!!!  :p

That was when I played to a land-based casino in new york years ago when the man that sit next to me started to scream "ding.. ding.. ding.. ding... I've got the jackpot!" I think he has mistakenly heard the sound because of his happiness, what I heard from the slot waspring... pring... pring.. pring...  :D

The reaction of his face while saying that word 100 times was priceless and I will never forget that ding.. ding.. ding.. expression. When I won the jackpot the must be my first reaction...  :D

Hahaha...I'm surprised that he could actually say "ding...ding...ding...ding..."

I would have instantly raised up both my hands, like Rocky did, and shout out "YEEEES!!!"...

or I would have simply flipped over backwards in my chair...  :D

I had the same problem myself with a respected casino

it basically credited my account which I could see in the background before the game finished

It even happened after I had stood/busted on my hand on blackjack

It does make you think that when you press the spin button the RNG just throws out a multiplier of your bet - skewed like a downhill ski slope with zero the most frequent outcome!!!!!

It does take the fun out of it!!!!

the real question to me is as Newbie points out - what happens on the bonus run - I like the idea that this resets as a new game within the original game but I do not know

for example pharaohs fortune where you can choose spins and multipliers - has this all been predetermined on that spin minutes ago?

would be nice for a casino rep to give some idea???

Cheers

A bonus game is usually played separately from the main game, as for free spins game, a separate set of reels are usually used for it. Some games are more advanced that both the free spins game and the base game can use the same set of reels, as I was informed, However, the result of each spin is always determined by the algorithms of the game, calculated and finalised within split second when you press that Start or Spin button.

Choosing the lesser number of spins but with a bigger multiplier would make not much difference than choosing the more spins with a smaller multiplier. Each choice has a range of winning amount, varying only very slightly in each choice, in most cases, except when it's time to pay out big...then the bigger multiplier would give the best win amongst the choices.

Well, yes, it would definitely be good if any casino rep can confirm this, but frankly speaking, they wouldn't know for sure either! Only the game coders and the game designers would know for sure...and they would never leak out such confidential information to the public - they are not ever allowed to for as long as they are employees of the company, and maybe not ever either. No one knows what is stipulated in their employment contracts...that's company's confidential secrets.  ^_^
