With the 2016 Olympic Games already completed it seems as if "Rio Reels" might already be somewhat obsolete, but there again a great slot game will always pay out regardless of it's theme... so is this a great game? My first impressions were hard to nail down - the game looks quite strange with smaller than usual symbols arranged into a super tight grid. I hit a pretty big win just a handful of spins in and wanted to check the games paytable to try and understand the meaning of the "2" and "3" labels on the games wilds but first found myself loooking at the games rules which are spread over several pages of text - possibly a little over the top for a slot machine! When I did find the games paytable it stil didn't explain the meaning of these mystery numerals and infact all of the games payouts take up only half of a single screen which seemed strange after trying to work my way through a set of rules the size of a book!
There's some strange choices amongst the games controls such as only being able to play between 5 and 30 paylines, and the minimum bet being 0.03 per line. These facts are mentioned in the games rules so it's fair to assume they apply at all casinos but there isn't any explanation for them. The games paytable adjusts itself to accommodate the selected betsize which is a touch I always think shows good attention to detail and makes it much easier to choose how much I would like to wager on each spin.
After playing the game a little longer I realized the numbers on the wild are actually multipliers - obvious, perhaps, but I wonder why the paytable fails to mention these are included in the game? These work in much the same as "Raging Rhino", and if you get a couple on a payline you can multiply the two together to get a final factor for your winning combination. This gives the game much more payout potential than the paytable would suggest, but I wasn't able to ascertain what the maximum possible multiplier for a single payline might be.
This was the first game I had seen from Booming Games, and I think they have a long way to go as far as presentation is concerned. It's not like there aren't enough great slot providers out there to take inspiration from and it's simply not good enough just to throw out a bog standard slot game in 2016 - I can't see the top casinos picking up these games until the quality is improved which would explain why only three casinos with this game are currently recorded at Askgamblers.
