9 Websites to Relax with While Taking a Break from Gaming

October 27, 2015.

Sometimes you just need a break from gaming. And that’s totally okay! I myself have taken plenty of gaming breaks over the years, and every time I’m glad I do. Whether you’re losing faster than you want to, find yourself getting stressed out when you play, or just need a change of pace, giving yourself a break from gaming is the best way to stay responsible and keep it fun in the future.

The question is, what should you do on your gambling hiatus? If you’re like me, you’ll still want to do something relaxing on your computer or mobile. So, we’re helping you out. Here are our 9 favourite sites for easing your stress away on your own vacation from gaming. And they’re all completely free!

1) Calm

Short, sweet, and to the point: Calm is one of the most popular relaxation tools for a reason. This meditation site lets you choose how long of a break you want from your hectic day, whether you just need a 2-minute cooldown or a 20-minute mental getaway. You can even choose your experience: use their personal audio guide or just enjoy the site’s beautiful nature animation in blissful silence.

Calm is currently available through its website, the App Store, and Google Play, so you can take it with you wherever you go.

2) Do Nothing for 2 Minutes

Do Nothing for 2 Minutes

We live in a fast-paced world. Heck, I can barely shut my mind up long enough to fall asleep. That’s where Do Nothing for 2 Minutes comes in. It’s simple: just open the website and do nothing for 2 minutes. If you do anything, even move the mouse, the timer will start over. I found it surprisingly challenging and a good reminder of the importance of taking a break. So put in your headphones, turn off your phone, and simply enjoy the website’s calming waves.

3) Rainfor.me

There’s nothing quite as relaxing as the sound of rain falling. But unfortunately, you can’t choose when a storm rolls in. (If only.) That’s where Rainfor.me can help. Just open the website and immerse your ears in your own personal rain shower. You can adjust the volume to fit your own preferences, and even play some calming music to set your own mood. Plus, it’s totally ad-free!

4) The Tonematrix

The Tonematrix

If you like getting lost in your own creations, you’ll love The Tonematrix. This free Audiotool website lets you make your own music through a simple “pentatonic step sequencer.” Just click some squares to start building your song. There’s an endless combination of patterns to be made, so be warned: it can get pretty addicting!

5) Relax Infinity

Relax Infinity

The makers of Red Bull have come up with their own take on online relaxation. (Kind of strange for an energy drink company, but hey, props to them!) They call it “Eternal Bliss, the Internet’s most relaxing website.” Put in your headphones and turn off all distractions: Relax Infinity is best when you totally immerse yourself.

The site puts you in control of your own relaxing journey. Use your arrow keys to change the speed of your experience or transport yourself to a totally different relaxation zone. The world contains everything from a far-out cyber world to a simple countryside farm, so feel free to explore at your own pace. You can even customise the onscreen messages to fit your own preferences.

6) The Quiet Place

The Quiet Place

Everyone needs their own quiet place where they can get away from the stresses of day-to-day life. But odds are you don’t have your own personal relaxation room. Thankfully, you’ve always got instant access to The Quiet Place. Just visit the website, hit your spacebar, and follow their relaxation instructions. The people behind the project have done a great job of giving you your own virtual escape.

7) This Is Sand

This Is Sand

Love making art but don’t have time to start on a big project? This Is Sand could become your new best friend. Just open the website or download the app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device to get started. Then tap/click the screen and watch as sand pours in from the top. Use the colour palette to switch colours or even make multi-coloured sand. It’s a simple interface, but you’d be amazed with what you can come up with. You can even check out the user gallery for inspiration.

8) MapCrunch

Wish you could teleport yourself to another part of the world when things get stressful? Well, MapCrunch comes pretty close to making that reality. This impressive site has pooled together tons of Google Street View images captured by users around the world, all for your enjoyment. You never know where you’ll end up or what sights you’ll see. And hey, you don’t even have to worry about booking a flight!

9) Relax.li

And all of them are at least an hour long, so you can take as much time as you need!
