Hi marcos75,

I'm sorry for the difficulty you're having, but I can assure you the check you've received is absolutely legit. Unfortunately, smaller banks and credit unions may not be experienced in dealing with Canadian checks, but hopefully the information I'm about to give you may help a bit.

All checks have a routing number on it, different countries have different systems, Canadian checks have a combination of a 3 and 5 digit number as their identifier. In other words, Canadian routing numbers are different from those in the United States. They contain a DASH (-) and 8-digits. In the U.S. the routing number always contains 9, and never has a dash.

Sometimes a bank's staff will have no idea of this or the bank simply will not accept international checks. I would first suggest speaking with your bank manager. If the manager is unable to accommodate you with this, the next best scenario would be to open a bank account at a larger bank (i.e., Bank of America, Citibank, Chase, etc.). A larger bank such as these receive foreign checks on a regular basis. Smaller banks and Credit Unions would not be recommended.

Beyond this, if you are not able to deposit the check, we can sort out another solution, however, before we can do this, it would require a stop payment be made on the check. This is a costly proposition, so I would recommend the steps I've mentioned above, before going this route.

All the best,

Tawni
